MUNCIE, Ind. - Host Ball State University put the clamps on the Bowling Green State University offense, as the Cardinals posted a 3-0 women's soccer victory Friday afternoon (Sept. 30). The Mid-American Conference match was held at the Ball State Soccer Field.
With the win, host BSU improves to 9-2 overall and 2-1 in MAC action, while the Falcons drop to 5-6 and 1-2, respectively. The Cardinals held the Brown and Orange without a shot on goal in the match.
Amy Holst put the hosts on the scoreboard with her third goal of the season at the 22:22 mark. That goal, coming off assists by Angie Heyer and Krista Mitts, proved to be all the scoring the Cardinal D would need.
Just over 15 minutes later, Heyer's corner kick found the back of the net for an unassisted goal, giving the hosts a 2-0 halftime lead.
Nearly nine minutes into the second half, BSU's Annie Aiello completed the scoring, off a pass from fellow freshman Bailey Decker.
The Cardinals dominated the stat sheet, with a 15-4 advantage in total shot attempts, and nine shots on goal to the Falcons' zero.
Ball State also had nine corner kicks to BG's total of two.
"In the many years I have watched the game of soccer, both as a fan and as a coach, I have yet to see a team win a game when it does not get a shot on goal," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "Today was no different."
Cardinal goalkeepers Alison Becker and Rachael Murphy combined for the shutout, with Becker working the first 88:01 of the match, but neither 'keeper was forced to make a save.
At the other end of the field, senior Ali Shingler made five saves, while freshman Christy Zabek played the final 8:35 of the day and made the first save of her collegiate career.
Friday's match marked the first time in school history that the Falcons were held without a single shot on goal. Since the inception of the program in 1997, BG had been held to one shot on goal in a match on eight occasions, most recently three weeks ago at Michigan State (Sept. 9).
The Falcons look to rebound on Sunday (Oct. 2), as BGSU plays the last of five consecutive road matches, facing Miami University in a 1:00 p.m. start. BG returns home next Friday (Oct. 7), meeting Ohio University in a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
