BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Senior Corbie Yee scored 92 seconds into the second overtime, giving the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team a 1-0 win over Ball State University Friday afternoon (Oct. 10). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Cochrane Field.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 8-3-3 on the year, and BGSU is 3-1-1 in MAC action. The Cardinals drop to 7-6-0 and 3-2-0, respectively.
Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault made six saves in posting her fourth shutout in a row and her school-record eighth of the season. As a team, the Falcons now have 10 shutouts, tying that school record.
"This really was a huge win today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "It was big to get a win against the two-time defending MAC champs, and a team we hadn't beaten in five years. It has lifted us up the table and given us a massive shot of confidence."
The winning play came after the Falcons had earned a corner kick, which was taken by sophomore Meagan Moran at the northwest corner of the field. The ball was played into the area, where it hit off several Falcons at near-pinball speed.
The first player to get a head on it was junior Samantha Bland, who knocked the ball forward. From there, sophomore Katie Stephenson directed the ball to Yee's feet at point-blank range. Yee quickly slotted a shot under BSU goalkeeper Rachael Murphy, giving the Falcons the win and sparking a wild on-field celebration by the home side.
Not surprisingly in a game that was tied for over 101 minutes, the statistics were relatively even. The Cardinals had a 13-12 advantage in shot attempts, with both clubs putting six shots on goal. BSU's Murphy stopped the Falcons' first five SOG before Yee's winner.
"Credit goes to everyone on the team, for playing their parts once again," said Richards. "As we went into overtime, we were confident that we could get the win. We talked about somebody being the hero, but also the fact that everyone had to play their part. Corbie was the hero and will get the headlines, but her goal was the culmination of a lot of different people playing their roles.
"It was a great performance and a great team win."
Prior to Yee's goal, neither team had a great many quality scoring opportunities. Many of the shots on goal were right at the respective 'keepers.
The visitors' best chances may have come just several minutes apart early in the second half. With just over 32 minutes remaining in regulation, the Cardinals' Katelyn Alexander took a free kick from just in front of her team's bench, near midfield. Her long shot was headed toward goal, and Arsenault was able to stop the ball, but could not avoid giving up a rebound. Bailey Decker quickly fired the rebound, but the one-timer sailed wide.
Then, less than four minutes later, a BG defensive misplay led to a shot by Abby Milillo, who had half of her team's shots on goal. In this case, Milillo fired toward the lower left-hand corner of the net, but Arsenault was able to make a diving save.
The Falcons did not have a great many grade-A chances, either. With just under 10 minutes left in the second half, Yee played a right-side cross to freshman Megan Amann in the penalty area, and Amann quickly fired a shot, but a BSU defender was able to get a boot on it. Then, in the last minute of the half, sophomore Katie Stephenson fired a shot over the bar after a Colleen Kordan free kick bounced off of the BSU defense.
The Falcons return to action at Cochrane Field on Sunday (Oct. 12), hosting Miami University in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff.
JUST A FEW FALCON NOTES
* BGSU's shutout was the team's 10th of the season, tying the school record ... the 2006 club also had 10 shutouts.
* The Falcons' shutout was the team's fourth in a row, tying that school record ... BG posted four consecutive shutouts in October of 2005, then matched that feat last month (Sept. 12-21, 2008) ... after giving up two goals in a three-minute span at Northern Illinois on Sept. 26, the Falcons have now strung together four more shutouts in a row.
* The BGSU defense is on a school-record pace ... the Falcons have allowed just nine goals through 14 games, an average of only 0.64 goals per game allowed ... the program record low is 1.30 gpg allowed, by both the 2005 and '06 teams.
* BGSU has not allowed a goal in the last 466:22, a new school record for longest shutout streak ... the old record of 445:03 was set in October of 2005, coinciding with BG's first-ever streak of four-straight shutouts.
* Redshirt sophomore Alexa Arsenault has been in goal for the entire 466:22 of the current streak, the longest streak of her career ... her previous best was a streak of 380:34 earlier this year, a streak which ended at NIU ... Arsenault's current streak is the second-longest by an individual in BGSU history ... senior Christy Zabek owns that record, with a scoreless streak of 544:48 to begin her Falcon career (Sept. 16, 2005 to Oct. 20, 2006).
* Arsenault's shutout vs. BSU was her eighth of the season, setting a new school record for an individual ... Erika Flanders had the old record, with seven shutouts in 2002, and Ali Shingler matched that total in 2005.
* Arsenault now has 14 career shutouts ... she ranks third on that school list, trailing only Flanders (17 from 1999-2002) and Shingler (16 from 2001-05).
* Arsenault's 14 shutouts have come in just 27 career starts ... she has lowered her goals-against average(s) to just 0.65 this season and 0.73 in her career.
* The Falcons now trail Ball State, 6-3-2, in the all-time series between the teams ... Friday's victory snapped a five-game winless streak (0-4-1) for BG in the series, as the Falcons' last win over the Cards came in Muncie in 2003.
* The tie during that 'winless' streak, came last Nov. 9, in the semifinal round of the MAC Tournament ... BGSU advanced past Ball State via penalty kicks ... each of the last three series meetings has required double overtime, and the teams are 1-1-1 each in those meetings.
* BGSU is now 2-3-0 in home meetings vs. Ball State, and the Falcons' last win over the Cardinals at Cochrane Field came in 2000.
* The Falcons are now 1-0-3 in overtime games this season and 18-14-22 all-time ... BGSU is unbeaten in the last nine OT contests, having gone 4-0-5 in that stretch.
* The Falcons' last overtime loss came at Ball State last Oct. 19.
* BGSU is now 53-51-8 all-time in home games ... prior to this season, the Falcons had not had an overall record of better than .500 at Cochrane Field since October of 1999.
* Senior Corbie Yee now has 17 career goals ... she has moved past Britt Anderson (16 from 2002-05) into sole possession of sixth place on the BGSU career list.
* Yee's goal vs. Ball State was the ninth game-winning goal of her career ... she has moved ahead of Samantha Meister (8 GWG from 2002-05) on that BG career chart ... Kristy Coppes (2001-04) holds the school records for both goals (52) and GWG (14).
* Yee ranks eighth in school history in career points ... she has 45 points through Friday's action, with 17 goals and 11 assists.
* Yee's goal vs. the Cardinals was her fourth career 'Golden Goal,' setting a new BGSU record ... Meister had the old mark, with three OT goals during her stellar career.
* BG's win over Ball State allowed the Falcons to move past the Cardinals into second place in the league standings with five-elevenths of the MAC schedule completed ... Central Michigan (5-0-0, 15 points) leads the league, followed by the Falcons (3-1-1, 10 pts.) ... BSU and Toledo each have 3-2-0 records and nine points, while Eastern Michigan (2-1-2, 8 pts.) currently ranks fifth in the MAC.
* The Falcons' 8-3-3 record is the best 14-game start in program history ... the previous best was a 7-5-2 ledger in the 2001 season.
* BGSU's 3-1-1 league slate ties the best five-game start to the conference season in school history ... the 1998 team also was 3-1-1 through five MAC matches.
