BOCA RATON, Fla. - Shire Standnes scored in overtime to give host Florida Atlantic University a 2-1 win over the Bowling Green State University men's soccer team Sunday morning/afternoon (Oct. 19). The Mid-American Conference match was held at FAU Field.
With the victory, the Owls improve to 4-9-1 overall and 1-4-1 in MAC play, while the Falcons drop to 3-9-1 and 0-4-0, respectively.
Junior Cameron Hepple scored the Falcons' lone goal, tying the score with just over 12 minutes left in regulation. But, Standnes knocked home a cross by Evan Kluge with 2:07 gone in the overtime period.
The home team had gotten on the board first, with a Ribeiro Guilherme goal at the 68:27 mark. Trevor Pluskota assisted on the play.
Hepple knotted the score with his unassisted marker, and sophomore Dusko Topolic hit the post with a shot with about five minutes left in regulation, but the game went to OT tied at 1-1.
Standnes' goal was his second OT winner in as many games. He scored the deciding goal in the Owls' victory at Duke earlier in the week.
The home team was credited with a 13-7 advantage in total shot attempts, and FAU held a 10-4 edge in shots on goal. Senior Brent Petkus, seeing his first game action of the season, had a total of eight saves. The save total tied his career high.
The Owls had 14 fouls to just five for the Falcons. FAU had three of the four yellow cards issued in the game.
The Falcons return home for Wednesday's non-league match vs. Wright State University. Kickoff is set for 3:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
The Wright State contest begins a stretch in which the Falcons play three of four games at home.
