TOLEDO, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Danielle Case's goal with 8:08 left in regulation lifted the University of Toledo past the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team, 1-0, Friday afternoon (Nov. 7). The game, a semifinal-round match in the Mid-American Conference Tournament, was held at UT's Scott Park.
With the win, the Rockets improve to 15-4-1 and advance to face Eastern Michigan in Sunday's (Nov. 9) championship match. EMU was a 2-0 victor over Central Michigan in Friday's opening game.
The Falcons see the season come to an end at 12-6-4.
Friday's match marked the Rockets' first home win over the Falcons in 11 years, and the team's first-ever victory over BG at UT's own Scott Park. The Falcons had been 6-1-0 in road games in the series, including a perfect 6-0-0 mark at Scott Park, prior to Friday.
On a warm (for early November) afternoon, rain began to fall just prior to the game, but had stopped by the time the opening whistle blew.
The Rockets had the first good scoring chance of the day, with approximately eight minutes elapsed. Off of a corner kick by Erin Flynn, Ali Leak's header caromed off the post.
Five minutes later, it was the Falcons' turn to threaten. After a UT foul, junior Colleen Kordan uncorked a long free kick from the midfield area. The ball bounced once, and went over the head of UT goalkeeper Vicki Traven. With a last-second leaping effort, Traven was able to get her hand on the ball and tip it over the crossbar and out of play.
Freshman Megan Amann took the ensuing corner kick, and played a ball to Kordan, on the right side of the goal. Kordan headed the ball back to the left, where freshman Alyssa Zuccaro was on the doorstep. Zuccaro's header was on target, but Traven was in position to make the save at the near post.
With 17 minutes left in the half, sophomore Jackie Tamerlano took a pass just outside the penalty area, cut the ball back to her left and fired. The blast, from 20 yards away, rang off the bar. Zuccaro was wide open in front of the goal, with nothing but net in front of her, but Tamerlano's shot was struck with such force that the rebound hit Zuccaro on the upper arm. A handball was called, and the Rockets were awarded a free kick.
Off a corner kick by Amann late in the half, senior Susan Hunter got her head on the ball in traffic. But, Traven was able to grab the ball before another Falcon could put a head on it, and the teams went to the intermission locked in a scoreless tie.
With 10 minutes gone in the second half, the Rockets nearly got a break. Molly Cornwell, the MAC Player of the Year, played a ball toward the goal from about 40 yards out. BG 'keeper Alexa Arsenault called for the ball but, as she came off the line, slipped and fell. The ball bounced over Arsenault, but junior defender Kaitlyn Kobe raced back to volley the ball away from danger just in front of the goal line. Kobe had several stellar defensive plays on the afternoon, but none bigger than the 'team save' of Cornwell's ball.
In an evenly played match, it was the Falcons countering with the next solid chance. BG had three corner kicks within a 45-second span midway through the half. Off the first CK, Zuccaro's shot was blocked out of bounds.
The second corner kick, taken by Amann, went to sophomore Katie Stephenson, who was unmarked in the center of the box. Stephenson settled the ball with one touch and drilled a shot from 10 yards out. But, Traven was able to leap and deflect that shot over the bar.
But, back came the Rockets. Cornwell shot wide, and Sarah Blake nearly put Brittany Hensler through with an entry pass several minutes later. But, Kobe hustled back to poke the ball away from Hensler deep in the BG end.
Off of a Blake corner kick with just under 13 minutes left, Tara Witt's header glanced off the top of the crossbar and out of play. Five minutes later, however, the Rockets would score off another Blake CK.
That kick was played out of the box by a BG defender, but the ball went to Case just outside the area. The Rocket freshman fired a shot that was just out of the reach of a diving Arsenault, curving just inside the right post.
Case's goal was the last shot attempt by either team on the day. The Falcons were unable to mount any solid scoring threats in the final moments, and the Rockets moved on in the tourney.
BGSU, as mentioned, ends the season with a record of 12-6-4. The 2008 Falcons set a school record for fewest losses in a season. The team's total of 12 wins tied for second on the BGSU list, and the Falcons' .636 winning percentage is the second-highest in the 12-year history of the program.
Friday's game marked the final contest for the team's stellar senior class of Brianne Eisenhard, Susan Hunter, Kristin McDonald, Gina Rossi, Corbie Yee and Christy Zabek. BGSU has posted 46 wins since the start of the 2005 season, the highest four-year total in Falcon history. Rossi, a fifth-year senior, has been with the BG program for 56 of the team's 112 overall victories.
