With the win, the Cardinals improve to 4-6-0 overall and 2-1-0 in MAC play, and BSU has won four of the last five contests after an 0-5-0 start to the season. The Falcons fall to 4-7-1 and 0-2-1, respectively.
BGSU had a narrow 6-5 advantage in shots on goal, and a whopping 12-2 margin in corner kicks, but could not get a shot past Ball State goalkeeper Nicole Wood. Wood made five saves in goal, and was helped immensely by a 'team save' in the final moments of the match, as a blast by Falcon sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro was blocked by the face of a Cardinal defender with 3:08 remaining.
Redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault had four stops in net for the Brown and Orange. She nearly stopped Eft's effort on the goal, as the BSU striker took a cross from Paige Stroinski and attempted to hit a one-time shot. The cross hit Eft's knee, and caromed off both the crossbar and Arsenault before dribbling over the goal line at the 24:31 mark.
"Today's result was a bitter pill to swallow," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "We had a multitude of chances, a ton of corners and a lot of possession. But, we did not have an advantage in the most important stat, which of course is goals.
"It's very frustrating right now, because the team is playing well and doing some really good things. We are just not getting the luck that we need, and the shift in momentum that a goal creates. I believe this is a great team, and this is a winning team. We just need to prove that by coming out and getting some wins."
The Falcons remain on the road to play a Sunday (Oct. 5) match at Miami University. That match will begin at 1:00 p.m. at the Miami Soccer Field.
