Barnes Named Semifinalist For Biletnikoff Award
October 26, 2009 | Football
The Tallahassee Quarterback Club Foundation, the creator and sponsor of the Biletnikoff Award, presented annually to the nation's outstanding college football receiver, has announced its semifinalist list, with Bowling Green State University's Freddie Barnes a part of that honor.
Barnes is one of 10 semifinalists for the Biletnikoff Award. He is joined by Dezmone Briscoe (Kansas), Vincent Brown (San Diego State), Eric Decker (Minnesota), Marshwan Gilyard (Cincinnati), A.J. Green (Georgia), Jordan Shipley (Texas), Demaryius Thomas (Georgia Tech), Golden Ttate (Notre Dame), Mike Williams (Syracuse)
Barnes is the nation's leading receiver in catches (99), yards (1,054), touchdowns (9), yards per game (131.8) and receptions per game (12.4). His reception total is 37 more than his nearest competitor, while his lead in yards receiving is 173 more than the next closest receiver and he has one more touchdown than any receiver in the country.
On the opening night of 2009 Barnes came away with 15 catches for 157 yards and two touchdowns in the Falcons' 31-14 win over Troy. The 15 receptions were a new school record, a mark that Barnes would be attacking throughout 2009.
Two weeks later at Marshall the former quarterback had 17 catches, but still Barnes was not done. On Oct. 10 at Kent State, the fifth-year senior had 22 catches for 278 yards and three touchdowns, earning national recognition by being named the National Wide Receiver of the Week by the College Football Performance Award committee.
A week later Barnes would earn that same award by the CFPA, recording 10 grabs for 160 yards and three touchdowns in a 31-17 win at Ball State. Through four Mid-American Conference games, Barnes has 53 catches for 694 yards and seven touchdowns.
The fifth-year senior has, or will, own several BGSU school records by years' end. His 99 catches are tied for the most in school history, while his 1,054 yards are 84 shy of the all-time school record for yards in a season, set by Cole Magner in 2003.
The Chicago Heights, Ill., native ranks first in school history with 241 career receptions, fourth in yards with 2,574 and sixth with 20 touchdown receptions.
The next vote for the top-3 finalist will take place on Nov. 16 and close on Nov. 19.
