Ali Leak headed home a cross from Molly Cornwell with just 7:40 left in the second half to provide the final margin.
"This was kind of the story of our season," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "We got another great effort from the team today, and we saw some good things, but we did not get the result we were hoping for.
"Before the game, we asked the team to compete and to play with pride. They did both of those things today. They did all the things we asked them to; it just wasn't to be."
Freshman goalkeeper Laura Arnold, making her first start against a MAC opponent, played all 90 minutes and made five saves.
Thursday's match marked the Falcons' fifth one-goal defeat in MAC play this season.
Neither team generated a great deal of scoring chances on the day. The Rockets had six shots on goal, to the Falcons' two. The teams combined for a total of 14 shot attempts and just three corner kicks in the ninety minutes of play.
The Rockets had a shot on goal in the game's opening minute, as Arnold made the save on two-time MAC Player-of-the-Year Cornwell.
With just under five minutes gone, sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro played an entry ball to onrushing freshman Sarah VonderBrink. As UT 'keeper Vicki Traven came out to contest the shot, VonderBrink's first-time redirection sent the ball rolling past Traven and into the net. But, the assistant referee's flag was up, signalling offsides against the Falcons.
The goalies did their part to eliminate opposing scoring threats and keep shots to a minimum as well. Eight minutes into the match, Traven grabbed a diagonal ball that came into the box off the foot of Falcon senior Kaitlyn Kobe. Six minutes later, Arnold made a leaping catch of a right-side cross by Leak.
Midway through the period, senior Carolyn Nesline hit a turnaround shot from about 25 yards out, but Traven got in position to make the save.
With 17 minutes left, the Falcons got their first corner kick of the day, with Colleen Kordan taking the kick. Her effort was headed by a UT player in the box, and came out to Kobe. The senior hit a shot from outside the penalty area, but it was wide of the target.
Just a few minutes later, Traven was the first player to a Kordan free kick, catching the long ball in the penalty area to thwart any scoring threat for the Falcons. Less than 40 seconds after that, Arnold went high in the air to catch a corner kick off the boot of Sarah Blake.
Ten minutes remained in the half when sophomore Katelyn Turner's left-to-right pass hit senior Stacey Lucas on the right side of the penalty area, near the touch line. With a defender marking her tightly, Lucas attempted to slide a ball into the center, but it was deflected away.
Just over eight minutes were left when UT's Nora Jereb hit a soft shot from 20 yards out. A Rocket teammate attempted to redirect the shot, but missed, and Arnold made the save.
With three-and-a-half minutes remaining, freshman Emily Rothwell's forward ball hit Lucas in stride down the right sideline. Lucas won the Falcons a corner kick, which was taken by junior Meagan Moran. The kick was deflected to junior Alicia Almond, stationed approximately 25 yards from goal. Almond hit a shot, but a UT defender was able to get a foot on it.
Over the final few minutes, each team had one more foray into the offensive end. Junior Jackie Tamerlano's crossing ball was parried by Traven, while UT's Kristen Lynn saw her cross sail through the box with no teammate there. The teams went to the half still locked in a scoreless tie.
In the second half, each team again had difficulty generating many grade-A chances. In the early going, Falcon sophomore Megan Amann played a cross into the box from the left side. Nesline got a touch on the ball, but was unable to get a shot off before several Rocket defenders combined to clear the ball out of the box.
Ten minutes into the period, Zuccaro had her shot blocked near the top of the box. At the other end, Arnold stopped shots by Megan Blake and Cornwell. The Falcon freshman broke up a cross by Megan Blake with nearly 20 minutes gone in the second half.
Much of the half was marked by midfield play, with neither team getting deep into the offensive zone on very many occasions. UT's Rachel Kravitz took a shot with just over 12 minutes left, forcing Arnold to make her most acrobatic save of the day.
That was the last shot by either team until Leak's goal. Cornwell hit a cross from the left side, and Leak's head met the ball in the center of the field on the six-yard line. She redirected the ball into the right side of the net.
The UT defense was able to keep the Falcons from getting a shot attempt over the remaining 7:40. The Rockets' kept the ball in the Falcons' defensive end of the field for much of the last four minutes of the match, and closed out the win.
The game marked the final collegiate contest for BGSU's six seniors. Samantha Bland, Jen Czapka, Kobe, Kordan, Lucas and Nesline all saw action in the match.
"I want to thank our six seniors for their efforts over the last four years," said Richards. "It was good that they all got to see action in the game today. All six of them have a lot to be proud of in their time at BGSU, and they will be missed."
