With the win, the Falcons improve to 3-2-0 on the season, while the Mastodons fall to 0-3-1.
Redshirt junior Alexa Arsenault made five saves to earn the 18th complete-match shutout of her career, setting a new school record in the process.
In a game that featured precious few scoring chances, especially in the opening half, the Falcons wound up with a 14-12 advantage in shots. However, the 'Dons put five of their shot attempts on target, compared to just two for BGSU.
"Today wasn't a pretty win, but it was a crucial win nonetheless," said 10th-year Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "It was nice to keep our win streak as well as our shutout streak going.
"I think we rode our luck at times, and we caused ourselves a few problems because we were unable to do some of the basic things well. It was a bit of a struggle today."
The Falcons' first precious scoring attempt came approximately 15 minutes into the match, and the play was started by sophomore Katelyn Turner. Turner played a ball out toward the right touch line, to freshman Keely Chandler. Chandler's cross found sophomore Alyssa Zuccaro in the box, and Zuccaro hit her shot hard. Unfortunately for the home team, however, the shot was right at IPFW 'keeper Kristen McFadden.
It was right around that time in the match that the Cochrane Field scoreboard went from operational to inoperational. Despite the best efforts of some BGSU athletics department staff members, the scoreboard refused to work for the final 75 minutes of the match, and Anthony Bellino, the Voice of Cochrane Field, provided the fans and teams with periodic clock updates.
Midway through the first half, Zuccaro's shot attempt had been the Falcons' only one of the match, compared to four by the 'Dons. And, it would be Zuccaro who had the home team's next shot as well. Amann curved an outswinging free kick into the box from the right side of the field. Senior co-captain Samantha Bland headed the ball back to the right, toward Zuccaro. The Falcon soph fired, but her shot was high of the target.
Several minutes later, a crossing ball by senior Jen Czapka was mishandled by McFadden, but one of her defenders was able to clear the ball before a BG attacker could get to it.
With under 10 minutes left in the half, senior Katelin Kobe and Zuccaro nearly hooked up on a pretty play. Kobe took a free kick from the left side of the pitch, and the ball headed toward the far post. Both Zuccaro and McFadden went for the ball, with 'Z' leaving her feet for an attempt at a diving header, but she just missed getting a noggin on it, and the ball sailed through the penalty area untouched. The teams went to halftime still locked in a scoreless tie.
IPFW had seven shot attempts, but no high-quality chances, in the first half. The Mastodons, however, would have only five total shots, but several strong scoring chances, in the second 45 minutes.
With less than five minutes gone after halftime, IPFW's Lisa Underwood played a through-ball to Brittni Roy, who had gotten behind the BG defense. But, Arsenault came charging off her line to emphatically block Roy's shot, knocking the ball well out of the 'danger area'.
In the 60th minute of the match, the Falcons got what would turn out to be the only goal that Arsenault and the BG defensive unit would need. The play began with some give-and-go passing between Turner and Zuccaro on the right side of the pitch. In front of the (inoperational) scoreboard, Zuccaro cut the ball back at the end line to avoid a defender, and slid a pass to junior Meagan Moran at the top of the 18-yard box.
Moran's shot hit a teammate, Turner, with the ball deflecting directly to Amann. The BG soph calmly placed her shot into the right side of the net. Turner and Moran received assists on the play, which came at the 59:17 mark.
"Credit to Megan for getting a goal -- a right-footer -- today," said Richards. "That's twice this season we have seen right-footed goals from Megan Amann. They don't come very often, but when they do, they come in bunches, and we are delighted."
Over the final half-hour of play, IPFW's best chance may have come with just under 20 minutes left. Roy came down the left side on a breakaway, but Arsenault was able to come off her line, cut down the angle and block Roy's shot attempt.
With under eight minutes left, Underwood played a forward ball to Roy yet again. However, Kobe was able to poke the ball away from Roy in the box. Roy recovered enough to get a toe on the ball before Arsenault, but could not keep the ball from rolling over the line for a goal kick. For the most part, the Falcons were able to keep the ball in IPFW's end of the field for the rest of the afternoon to preserve the shutout win.
"Congratulations to Alexa for getting the shutout win," said Richards. "Again, it wasn't the greatest of games, but we stuck it out and got the win, and sometimes that's what you have to do."
The Falcons had eight corner kicks to the 'Dons' two. Zuccaro had a game-high four shot attempts, while junior Katie Stephenson had three. Roy and Tara O'Toole had three shot attempts apiece for the visitors.
The Brown and Orange will be home again next weekend, concluding a three-match homestand with two contests at Cochrane. BGSU will face St. Bonaventure in Friday (Sept. 11) action, and the Falcons will meet Youngstown State on Sunday afternoon (Sept. 13).
