Falcons, Eagles combine for nine second-half goals as BGSU suffers first MAC loss of season
FINAL STATS - HTML | BOXSCORE - PDF
With the win, the Eagles improve to 5-5-2 on the season, and Eastern is now 2-0-1 in MAC play. The Falcons are now 4-7-1 and 2-1-0, respectively.
Ten different players scored a goal in the match, with nine of those players finding the back of the net in the second half.
The Falcons never led, but rallied to tie the match at 2-2 on goals by senior Katie Stephenson and freshman Madeline Wideman early in the second period. Those goals came less than two minutes apart.
EMU's Paige Sheridan scored just 31 seconds after Wideman's goal, however, and the Eagles never trailed again. Freshman Tracy Togba and junior Alyssa Zuccaro each scored to cut the Eastern lead to a single goal, but the home team responded with yet another goal each time.
In addition to Sheridan, the Eagles got goals from Stephanie Clarke, Stephanie Janssens, Chelsea Detrick, Julie Kaim and Maggie Christensen. Clarke also had three assists on the afternoon.
For the Falcons, Stephenson, Wideman and Zuccaro all had three-point days, with a goal and an assist. Senior Jackie Tamerlano and junior Megan Amann each had an assist.
"It's been a long time since I've coached in such a bizarre game," said Falcon coach Andy Richards. "It's not often that you have a 6-4 game."
The only goal of the first half came almost exactly halfway through the period. EMU's Clarke took the ball off a bounce and hit a volley that sailed inside the far left post from 15 yards out. While that was the lone goal of the first 45 minutes, it was certainly not the only chance.
"I was amazed that we hadn't scored in the first half," said Richards. "We hit the post twice, Maddy Wideman had a great opportunity, so did Ashley Miller, and we had a very good penalty claim turned down as well. So, those were five opportunities that we didn't take or weren't awarded, which was amazing in itself.
"Then, we got four goals, and four good goals, in the second half."
In the second half, the Falcons had a shot attempt just 11 seconds in, as EMU goalkeeper Erika Mudrak made a save on Zuccaro. The Eagles' first shot of the half, however, went in.
Janssens converted a rebound off of a corner kick just 1:27 into the period, giving the hosts a 2-0 lead. But, the Falcons would rally.
Stephenson picked up her third goal of the season at the 54:16 mark, and Wideman scored just 1:51 later, tying the contest with 33:53 remaining in the half.
Only 31 seconds after Wideman's goal, however, Sheridan was on target with a shot from 20 yards out. The Eagles had the lead for good, although the Falcons would continue to battle back.
After the four goals in a span of 10:11, the teams went nearly 12 minutes without a goal, before Detrick chipped in a volley off of Sheridan's pass in the 69th minute. Quickly, though, the Falcons would respond.
Togba scored her second collegiate goal, and her second goal in as many games, cleaning up a rebound in the box at the 72:16 mark.
With just under 10 minutes remaining, however, Julie Kaim converted from short range off of a corner kick, giving the Eagles a two-goal lead yet again.
Still, the visitors battled back. Zuccaro picked up her team-leading seventh goal of the fall, off of assists by Stephenson and Wideman, and the Falcons were within 5-4 with 7:03 left.
And, BGSU had the next shot attempt of the game, as Mudrak was forced to make a save on a Wideman shot with 2:41 left. Only 30 seconds after that shot, however, Christensen took a through-ball from Janssens and sealed the win.
Mudrak, making her first collegiate start, had four saves for the Eagles. Falcon senior Alexa Arsenault stopped four of the eight shots she faced, while sophomore Laura Arnold played the final 17-plus minutes in goal, making one save.
"We had very good attacking play today, and we did some great things offensively," said Richards. "We also showed perseverance to keep coming back, which was encouraging, and we competed right up to the end.
"But, of course, the defending was poor, individually and collectively. It wasn't just the goalkeepers or the defenders, it was all over the field. You don't allow six goals without making some mistakes, and it was very disappointing to concede so many.
"This was an opportunity lost. It is a strange feeling to score four goals and to be so dynamic -- we could have scored eight or nine goals -- and still lose the game. We have to take more pride in our defending, and we need to focus a lot more at certain times of the game if we want to reach the goals that we have set for this year. We will look to put things right, beginning with practice tomorrow, and we will get ready for Sunday."
BGSU had a narrow 17-16 advantage in shots, but the Eagles had 11 shots on goal to the Falcons' eight.
The Falcons return home for a Sunday (Oct. 3) match, taking on defending MAC champion Central Michigan in a 1:00 p.m. kickoff at Cochrane Field. The match is the team's annual 'Pink-Out' contest, with fans encouraged to wear pink in support of breast cancer awareness.
FALCON TEAM NOTES
* The ten goals is the highest two-team total in a BGSU women's soccer game in over six years, since a 7-3 Falcon win over Duquesne on Aug. 27, 2004 ... the BG record for goals in a game by both teams is 11, in a pair of lopsided wins for the Brown and Orange (9-2 over Robert Morris on Sept. 6, 1998; 10-1 over Youngstown State on Oct. 3, 2001).
* The Falcons had not allowed six goals in a game since another trip to Michigan, over a decade ago ... the last team to score six times against BGSU was Detroit, in a 6-3 win over the Brown and Orange on Sept. 6, 2000.
* The Detroit game mentioned in the previous note was just the third game (and the first-ever loss) in the head-coaching career of Andy Richards ... the Falcons allowed six or more goals six times in the first three years of the program, but have surrendered six goals only twice in Richards' 10-plus year, 228-game head-coaching career.
* For the curious (or masochistic), the BGSU school record for goals allowed in a game is seven ... the Falcons lost, 7-1, at Oakland on Oct. 12, 1998.
* BGSU has scored a total of 17 goals this year to date, topping the total for all of last season ... the 2009 Falcons scored 16 goals in 20 games.
* The Falcons scored just seven goals in 11 MAC games last year ... through three conference games this fall, BGSU has scored nine times.
* BGSU has scored nine goals over the last three games, and 12 goals in the last four contests ... those totals are the Falcons' highest since early in the 2008 season ... in mid-September of that year, the falcons scored 16 goals in a four-game span, posting wins over Tennessee Tech (7-0), Marshall (3-0), Detroit (4-0) and Xavier (2-0).
* The Falcons had not scored nine goals in a span of three MAC games since late in the 2002 season.
FALCON INDIVIDUAL NOTES
* Junior Alyssa Zuccaro's three-point game on Friday gives her a team-high total of 18 points this year ... she leads the Falcons with seven goals, and is tied for second on the team with four assists.
* Zuccaro's goal and point totals are the highest by a BGSU player since 2005 ... that season, Samantha Meister had eight goals and 22 points.
* Zuccaro has 10 points (four goals, two assists) through three MAC games ... last year, no Falcon had more than four points in MAC play (11 games).
* Zuccaro has scored 15 points over the last four matches ... that is a school record for points in a four-match span.
* 'Z' has been involved in the scoring of nine of the Falcons' last 12 goals.
* Freshman Madeline Wideman now has eight points this season to date ... that is the highest total by a Falcon freshman since Megan Amann (12 points) and Zuccaro (11) each reached double digits in their first fall in Falconland (2008).
* Seven of Wideman's eight points this season have come over the last four games.
* Another freshman, Tracy Togba, has scored a goal in back-to-back matches ... Togba scored the winning goal with under nine minutes left in Sunday's (Sept. 26) 1-0 win over Kent State, and had the Falcons' third goal on Friday at EMU.
* Amann assisted on Togba's goal in Ypsilanti ... Amann now has a team-leading five assists this season ... she has had at least five helpers in each of her first three seasons at BGSU ... Amann had eight assists as a freshman in 2008, and added five last fall.
* Amann has 18 career assists in 54 games as a Falcon ... she has moved into a tie for fourth on the school list, with Leah Eggleton (2002-05) ... Julie Trundle (2002-05) holds the school record with 33 career assists.
* Zuccaro now has 36 career points at BGSU ... she is 10th in school history in career points ... Amann has moved into sole possession of 14th on that list, witih 26 career points ... senior Katie Stephenson, with 24 career points, is one point away from moving into the BGSU top 15.
* Stephenson has eight points this season, tied with Wideman for second on the Falcons ... Stephenson's point total matches a career best, and she has also tied a personal best with three goals this year to date.
* Senior Jackie Tamerlano's assist vs. the Eagles was her first point of the season ... she now has 14 career points on five goals and four assists.
