With the win, the Rockets are now 9-2-2 overall and 5-0-0 in MAC play. The Falcons drop to 4-9-1 and 2-3-0, respectively.
Ana Reynolds took a shot at the 59:24 mark that hit the crossbar, hit the ground and bounced up into the air. As the teams battled for the rebound, the referee blew his whistle and a goal was awarded. The Falcons vehemently argued the call, but the goal stood, and it proved to be the winning tally.
Toledo was credited with 18 shots to the Falcons' four. UT goalkeeper Vicki Traven was not credited with a single save as the hosts were listed with a 9-0 advantage in shots on goal.
Senior goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault made eight saves in her complete-match effort for the Falcons.
The Rockets' first solid scoring chance of the game came with approximately 10 minutes gone, as Kristen Lynn's header off of a teammate's cross sailed toward goal. BGSU sophomore defender Emily Rothwell, stationed at the right goalpost, blocked the shot, and the Falcons were able to clear the ball out of danger.
UT had the first six shot attempts of the day, before the Falcons took a crack at goal midway through the first half, after a corner kick by freshman Madeline Wideman sailed into the box. Traven punched the ball away, but sophomore Sarah VonderBrink tracked it down and hit a shot from the right side of the box. With her momentum taking her away from goal and with a UT defender gently nudging her in that same direction, VonderBrink could not get a great deal of force behind her shot, which sailed wide.
With 13 minutes left in the opening half, the Rockets' Natalia Gaitan hit a shot from close range, but Arsenault was equal to the task, coming up with the save.
Under six minutes remained in the period when freshman Ashley Miller's forward ball nearly found junior Alyssa Zuccaro behind the UT defense. At the last second, however, a Rocket defender stuck her leg in the air and got a boot on the ball to knock it away. The teams went to the half knotted in a goalless draw.
The Falcons had a slightly more successful start to the second half than the first. Miller tracked down a ball in the Toledo end of the field, headed down the right sideline and hit a crossing ball, but Traven was able to grab it. Then, off of the 'keeper's service, BGSU stole the ball right back, and a forward ball was just out of the reach of freshman Tracy Togba, with Traven clearing it a split-second before Togba could get there.
Ten minutes into the half, the visitors generated a good chance after a foul by the Rockets approximately 30 yards from goal. Senior co-captain Katie Stephenson took the ensuing free kick, sliding a pass to Rothwell on her left. Rothwell took a few dribbles and played a low ball into the six-yard box, where Zuccaro redirected it toward goal. But, the shot wound up going just wide of the target.
Several minutes later, the Rockets' Rachel MacLeod deked a BG defender and brought the ball along the end line. She hit a hard shot from the right side, but Arsenault thwarted MacLeod with a diving save.
Less than a minute after MacLeod's shot, Zuccaro singlehandedly created a chance for the Falcons at the other end of the pitch. Her hustle and determination enabled her to win the ball in the Rockets' end of the field, win two challenges by UT defenders while going to the ground, and somehow get up and nearly get a shot off. However, Traven smothered the ball just as 'Z' made a sliding effort to shoot.
Then, with 30:37 left in the match, the Rockets' side of the scoreboard changed from '0' to '1' as Reynolds was credited with a goal. The play began when Brittany Hensler made a run down the left side and crossed the ball to Reynolds, just outside the penalty area. Reynolds took a quick dribble and fired a shot that, as mentioned, hit the bar, hit the ground and caromed up in the air. As a Rocket player hit a follow try over the goal, the whistle blew. When the smoke cleared, the home team had a one-goal lead.
Ten minutes later, the Rockets' Sarah Blake hit a shot from the top of the box. Arsenault blocked the shot, but the ball trickled past her and rolled toward the end line. The Falcon 'keeper, however, was able to turn and grab the ball before it crossed the stripe.
Fifteen minutes remained when Reynolds hit a well-placed shot that seemed ticketed for the upper right corner, but Arsenault made a leaping grab to deny her.
The Falcons pushed forward in the final few moments, and had a corner kick with under a minute left, but could not get the tying goal.
BGSU heads to Muncie, Ind., for a Sunday (Oct. 10) match against Ball State University. Kickoff for that game is 1:00 p.m. at the Ball State Soccer Field.
