With the win, the Falcons end the regular season with records of 6-8-3 overall and 3-3-0 in MAC action. The victory clinched a berth in the MAC Tournament for the Brown and Orange. BGSU will be the third seed for the four-team tournament, and will face second-seeded Western Michigan in Friday's (Nov. 12) semifinal round in Akron, Ohio, with kickoff time scheduled for 8:00 p.m.
FAU, a MAC affiliate for men's soccer, sees the season come to an end with an overall record of 5-9-2 and a 2-4-0 MAC ledger. The Owls went 4-2-2 at home this year.
"FAU has had some great results at home," said BGSU head coach Eric Nichols. "They were very good tonight; they gave us fits. To come down here and get a win is pretty big for us. Obviously, we are excited to earn a berth in the MAC Tournament and see our season continue."
Comiskey's goal came at the 69:29 mark of the match, as he took a cross from sophomore Zach Lemke and beat FAU goalkeeper James McCormick to the right. The goal was Comiskey's second of the season.
In a win-or-go-home match for both teams (although BGSU would have qualified for the MAC Tournament with a tie), Falcon sophomore Joey D'Agostino had given the visitors a 1-0 lead just three minutes into the game. D'Agostino headed home a corner kick from junior Max Weston at the 3:10 mark.
After the Falcons had the first five shot attempts of the game, the hosts scored on their first shot of the night. The Owls' leading scorer, Darnell King, equalized with nearly 26 minutes gone, bending his shot into the upper-right corner of the net from approximately 20 yards out.
King's shot would prove to be the only goal surrendered by Falcon junior 'keeper Miguel Rosales, however. Rosales made three saves to earn the victory and help propel the Brown and Orange back into the league tournament after a one-year absence.
"The guys are very pleased about the way that the game went," said senior tri-captain Thomas McLean. "After being predicted to finish sixth in the MAC, we are happy that we were able to prove some people wrong and qualify for the MAC Tournament.
"Tonight's game was a tough one. FAU played us very well. We were able to get the result that we needed through hard work. And, some clutch plays by some of the guys throughout the game helped push us over the top, and we couldn't be more pleased."
McCormick made one save for the Owls, who held a narrow 14-13 advantage in total shots. FAU put four shots on goal to the Falcons' three, although BGSU senior tri-captain Dusko Topolic hit the goalpost with a shot with 12 minutes gone in the second period.
The Falcons, as mentioned, now prepare for the MAC Tournament. BGSU tied Buffalo for third place in the final regular-season standings (see PDF at the top of the page), but the Falcons win the tiebreaker with the Bulls by virtue of a win in the teams' head-to-head meeting. BG downed UB, 2-0, at Cochrane Field on Oct. 9.
"We are hoping that we can push on now," said McLean. "During the upcoming week, we will prepare for Western Michigan and try to move on from there. You never know what can happen when you get into a one-off game."
Akron, as the regular-season champion, will host the conference tournament. The Zips will face the fourth-seeded Bulls in Friday's first semifinal, with start time set for 5:00 p.m. The two semifinal winners will return to UA's Lee Jackson Field for the MAC Tournament's championship match, on Sunday, Nov. 14, in a 4:00 p.m. kickoff.
