BGSU Student-Athletes To Team Up To Assist Haiti Relief Efforts
February 20, 2010 | General
Bowling Green, Ohio – Bowling Green State University student-athletes will be working together on two initiatives in the coming weeks to provide aid for those impacted by the devastating earthquake in Haiti. Falcon fans will have the opportunity to take part in the efforts at the Feb. 27 basketball doubleheader, as well as at a March 21 student-athlete talent show.
“As a team of 425, we're working to make a difference,” said Student-Athlete Advisory Committee President Meg Richardson, a senior swimmer for the Falcons. “The devastation in Haiti is so broad that it's hard to imagine from our perspective. As student-athletes, we are fortunate on many levels. Our volunteer efforts are often focused on the community and here on campus, but the Haiti earthquake is something we all need to work together on to make an impact.”
BGSU's Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) will host “Hoops for Haiti” on Feb. 27 during the 12 p.m. women's basketball game against Kent State and the 2:30 p.m. men's basketball game against Akron. Fans will be able to help in the relief efforts in three ways:
• In a special ticket opportunity, $2 from each ticket sold over the phone at 877-BGSU TICKET or in-person at the BGSU Athletic Ticket Office (beginning at 9 a.m. ET on Monday, Feb. 22) will be donated to the Haiti relief efforts.
• SAAC representatives will be on hand to collect non-perishable goods that can be shipped directly to Haiti as part of the relief effort. Specific items that are needed include bagged rice, dried beans, and first-aid kits. Canned food items are NOT currently needed.
• A commemorative “Hoops for Haiti” t-shirt, available exclusively through the BGSU Bookstore, will be worn by BGSU's basketball teams during warm-ups and will be for sale at Anderson Arena and online at BGSUFalcons.com. Proceeds from the t-shirt sales will go directly to the Haiti relief efforts.
In addition to those efforts, SAAC will stage a student-athlete talent show on March 21 in Perry Field House at 7 p.m. Student-athletes from all 18 sports will revive the popular talent show from two years ago and display their talents away from the arena of competition. Tickets will cost $2 and will be available at the door before the event.
BGSU is working directly with two non-profit organizations in this effort, the American Red Cross and ISOH/IMPACT. Donations and products will be funneled through these groups and directed to their respective Haiti relief efforts.
