With the win, the Spartans improve to 5-2-1 on the season, while the Falcons fall to 1-6-1.
Two-time All-American Laura Heyboer got the scoring started in the 16th minute, expertly heading home a cross. Hannah Peterson centered the ball from the right side of the pitch, and Heyboer's header curved just out of the reach of the outstretched arms of BGSU senior goalkeeper Alexa Arsenault. The ball nestled into the side netting, and the Spartans had a 1-0 lead.
Early in the second half, the visitors doubled the lead on a goal by Olivia Stander. As the Falcons worked to clear the ball out of their own penalty area, an MSU player got a foot on it. The ball popped up in the air to the Spartans' Annie Steinlage. Steinlage quickly slid a pass to her left, where Stander was unmarked. Stander had time to settle the ball and pick her corner. There was little Arsenault could do as Stander fired into the lower right-hand corner of the net.
Both Heyboer and Stander now have five goals on the season.
BGSU had had a scoring chance with the game just two minutes old, as sophomore Sarah VonderBrink played a left-to-right diagonal ball into the box. But, MSU 'keeper Jill Flietstra leapt high into the air to grab it a split-second before Falcon junior Alyssa Zuccaro arrived.
With 18 minutes left before halftime, the Falcons moved the ball past midfield, with senior Jackie Tamerlano and freshman Madeline Wideman involved in the buildup. Tamerlano found Zuccaro with a pass, and the junior uncorked a hard shot from long range. But, Flietstra was able to make the save.
Just over a minute later, Arsenault made a diving stop of a shot by Stander. Stander had five shot attempts on the day, with all five being placed on goal.
With 13 minutes remaining in the period, the Spartans' Kelsey Kassab slid a shot just wide of the far post. MSU's lead was a single goal at halftime, thanks to the Heyboer header.
Neither team had as many chances in the second half. The Spartans threatened just a moment before Stander's goal, as Stander played a left-side cross in the air. Arsenault, battling the sun, was able to punch the ball away before MSU's Hannah Peterson arrived in the six-yard box. Stander, however, would score just over 90 seconds later.
Midway through the half, State's Mikki Dennis hit a hard shot, less than a minute after checking into the match. But, the shot was directly at Arsenault, who grabbed the ball and held on. The final 23-plus minutes would see only one shot attempt, as MSU's Jordan Mueller fired high with under three minutes remaining.
The Spartans enjoyed a 19-4 advantage in total shot attempts, putting eight shots on goal to the Falcons' two. Arsenault made six saves in her complete-match effort, while MSU's Flietstra had two stops at the other end.
The Falcons hit the road to conclude the non-league portion of the schedule. BGSU plays a Sunday (Sept. 19) match at Indiana State University, with kickoff scheduled for 1:00 p.m.
