Bowling Green, Ohio - A local, family-owned business has committed to support the Bowling Green State University hockey program through the Bring Back the Glory campaign by naming the retail space in the BGSU Ice Arena.
Newlove Realty will make a donation that will supplement previous giving to designate a total gift of more than $107,000 for the Bring Back the Glory campaign. The gift will name the newly renovated pro shop at the BGSU Ice Arena. The equipment and merchandise shop will provide a sustainable revenue source for the hockey program while serving fans and athletes alike.
“We want to thank the Newlove family for their gift to the BGSU Ice Arena,” Director of Athletics Greg Christopher said. “They believe in BGSU and they believe in hockey. The Ice Arena is an important venue for our community — it's a place many people hold dear. The Newloves have answered the call for leadership, and we are thrilled to see their name in the building.”
Hockey coach Chris Bergeron added: “The renovations to the Ice Arena show the commitment that the University and the community have made to Bowling Green hockey. I am thankful to the Newloves for the donation they have made and the impact it will have on the facility and, ultimately, on our program.”
Dick Newlove, a 1969 BGSU alumnus, runs Newlove Realty as a family operation with his son, Andy Newlove. The business has grown to become one of the largest property rental and real estate sales operations in Wood County after Dick's father, Al Newlove, started the business in Bowling Green more than 50 years ago.
“We see the Ice Arena as a community asset, and as something that connects the University community with the wider city community,” Dick said. “Historically, that building has been something that has brought the whole community together, whether it be for hockey games at the high school and University level, or the cultivation of Olympic figure skaters like Scott Hamilton and Alissa Czisny.”
Andy noted that the BGSU Ice Arena is frequently used by people of all ages — from youth skaters and their families that participate in open skates and skating clubs, to teenagers who compete in high school hockey tournaments, to the fans of all ages that attend Falcon hockey events.
“We really feel like Bowling Green and BGSU have done a lot for our business, and we feel BGSU plays a large part in making the community what it is,” Andy said. “We hope our support of BGSU really makes a difference in Wood County and northwest Ohio.”
The Newlove family has long served Bowling Green State University through their service and philanthropy. Dick served on the BGSU Board of Trustees between 1983 and 1991, and on the BGSU Foundation Board of Directors between 1996 and 2000. He has also served as chair of the Foundation Board. Dick currently serves on the Advocates Board for the College of Arts and Sciences, and his wife, Laurie, has served on the Falcon Club Advisory Board and the Friends of the University Libraries Board.
Dick and Laurie are longtime members of The Presidents Club, a philanthropic society to recognize lifetime giving to the BGSU Foundation, Inc., and Falcon Club, a group to recognize philanthropic giving to intercollegiate athletics.
Dick's daughter, Megan, currently serves on the BGSU Board of Trustees.
Andy currently serves on the Student Affairs Advocates Board. He and his wife, Megan, are members of The Presidents Club at BGSU. Megan is a two time graduate of BGSU, and a former member of the Falcon Club Advisory Board.
The Bring Back the Glory campaign seeks to bolster the hockey program at BGSU, and has generated $2.7 million toward the campaign goal of $5 million. Falcon hockey was a dynasty in the 1970s and 1980s, culminating in the 1984 NCAA National Championship in Lake Placid. The Falcons outlasted the University of Minnesota-Duluth in the longest collegiate hockey championship game in history, winning 5-4 in four overtimes.
