Bowling Green, Ohio - Stephen Stein's 45-yard field goal with 6:35 to play broke a tie and gave the White team a 10-7 victory over the Orange in BGSU's Friday night Spring Game. All of the scoring came in the second half of a solid defensive outing for the Falcons.
The two teams combined for just 118 total yards in the first half including a number of 3-and-outs. Gabe Martin stopped the Orange team's first drive with an interception at the White 36-yard line but that was the only turnover until late in the first half.
The offenses found some rhythm in the second half even though a couple of drives stalled deep in the opponent's territory. On White's first drive of the second half, quarterback Matt Schilz found Shaun Joplin for 35 yards to the six-yard line. John Pettigrew rushed for three yards, followed by an incomplete pass. Pettigrew then carried the ball to the two-yard line but was stuffed for a loss of three on fourth down.
Orange took over at its own 35-yard line midway through the third quarter and Schilz found Kamar Jorden for 23 yards to cross midfield. Jamel Martin had five carries for 34 yards, finally breaking the scoreless tie with a four-yard plunge. Kyle Burkhardt's extra point was good to put the Orange on top 7-0.
The White team came right back down the field as Schilz connected with Adrian Hodges on a 60-yard completion to the eight-yard line and, after a holding penalty, threw an 18-yard touchdown strike to Tyler Beck with 1:12 left in the third. Stein's kick capped the three-play, 68-yard drive and tied the score.
In the fourth quarter, White used a seven-play, 50-yard drive to get down to the 27-yard line. Stein lined up and scored on a 45-yard field goal that gave the team a 10-7 lead.
Orange made one last push on its next possession as Trent Hurley hit Chris Scheidt for 37 yards to the 23-yard line. Martin had three straight carries for 11 yards to the 12-yard line and Hurley eventually found Martin on an 11 yard catch to the one. On second-and-goal from the one, Orange fumbled the ball away and White locked up the game from there.
From a quarterback standpoint, Schilz ended the game 20-of-39 for 249 yards and a touchdown. Hurley was 10-of-26 for 111 yards and an interception. Hodges had three catches for 101 yards and Martin led the Falcons in the running game with 13 carries for 51 yards.
Defensively, Micky Wagner had a team-high 12 tackles to go with four sacks and 4.5 tackles for loss. Gabe Martin added 11 tackles, 1.0 for loss, and Darius Gilbert had 3.0 tackles for loss. Paul Swan also had 3.0 tackles for loss and a sack and Chris Jones had seven tackles, 2.5 for loss and a sack.
