With the victory, BGSU improves to 15-7 in dual-match play this season. More importantly, the fourth-seeded Falcons advance in the league tourney. BGSU moves on to face top-seeded Miami University in Saturday's (April 30) semifinal round.
The Rockets, seeded fifth for the nine-team tournament, see the season come to an end with a dual-match record of 13-10.
The teams began the day indoors at the Chippewa Club, and BGSU captured the doubles point. The Falcons never trailed in two of the three doubles matches, but one of BG's wins came in that third match. Freshman Nikki Chiricosta and sophomore Mary Hill fell behind twice in third-flight action.
That duo fell behind the Rockets' tandem of Amanda Border and Silvia Carvajal in the early going, as Toledo won two consecutive games to take a 2-1 lead. The Falcons evened the score, then saw the Rockets go ahead, 4-2, in the match. But, Chiricosta and Hill came roaring back, winning six-straight games for the 8-4 win that clinched the doubles point.
BG's first doubles win came at the second flight, as another sophomore/freshman duo picked up a victory. Soph Jade Johnson and first-year Falcon Emily Reuland started fast and finished strong en route to an 8-3 win over Ashley Frey and Alexandra Cristello. Johnson and Reuland took a 4-1 lead, saw the Rockets rally to within 5-3, then captured three games in a row for the victory.
The Falcons never trailed at the top flight, but that match was abandoned once the other two contests were completed. At the number-one flight, senior co-captain Christine Chiricosta and sophomore Maddy Eccleston held a 6-4 lead over UT's Polina Guimaraes and Kelsey Anonsen when play was halted. The top-flight contest was tied at both 1-1 and 2-2 before Chiricosta and Eccleston won the next four games. Guimaraes and Anonsen took the next two contests to get within two games before the match was stopped.
The teams moved approximately 100 yards westward for singles play, heading to the Chippewa Club's outdoor courts. BGSU won the opening set in four of the six singles matches, with three of those Falcons closing out victories to clinch the quarterfinal-round win.
The first match to finish came at the third flight, where Nikki Chiricosta downed Anonsen with stunning efficiency. Chiricosta made quick work of her UT opponent, winning six-straight games to take her opening set. She spotted Anonsen a game in the second set, then won six more games in lightning-quick fashion for the 6-0, 6-1 win.
Including her doubles match with Hill, Nikki Chiricosta won 18 of her final 19 games on Friday.
Chiricosta's doubles partner was the next winner in singles, as Hill topped Christine Coffman in straight sets at the fourth flight. The BG sophomore rallied back from a 3-2 deficit in her opening set, winning four consecutive games. Then, Hill won four-straight games to begin the second set, en route to a 6-2 victory.
Reuland provided the clinching point with a win at flight number five. The Falcon freshman downed Cristello by identical 6-4 scores. Reuland held the lead for much of her opening set, but trailed on multiple occasions in the second set before reeling off wins in the last three games to give her team the win.
Each of the other three Falcons on the court either won one set or were in the process of doing so when their respective matches were abandoned. Christine Chiricosta lost her opening set in a tiebreaker to Guimaraes at the top flight. But, the senior bounced back for a 6-3 win in the second set, and Chiricosta had won the opening game of set number three.
Eccleston had won her first set, 6-4, over Frey at the second flight, and the two players were locked in a 5-5 tie in the second set. Junior co-captain Jessica Easdale had dropped a close first set, 6-4, to Border, but Easdale was up by a 5-2 score in the sixth-flight match.
The Falcons, as mentioned, will meet Miami in Saturday's semifinal round. That match is scheduled to begin at 10:00 a.m. at Ypsilanti High School.
