Falcons Announce 2011-12 Women's Basketball Schedule

Miller & Company will begin Stroh Center Era in November
The Bowling Green State University women's basketball team begins a new era in November, as the Falcons of head coach Curt Miller will play at least 14 regular-season games in the brand-new Stroh Center. The team's 2011-12 schedule was announced on Friday afternoon (Aug. 19).
The Falcons will play a total of 11 games against teams that participated in national postseason play a year ago. BG, with nine freshmen and sophomores on the roster, will look to create a homecourt advantage in the Stroh Center after going 46-2 over the last 48 games in the team's former home venue, Anderson Arena.
“I am excited about our tough 2011-12 schedule,” said Miller, who begins his 11th season at the helm. “With our non-conference schedule, we have been able to achieve a nice balance between home and road games.
“We are challenging our young team right from the start by playing our first two games against Dayton and Purdue which are expected to be ranked in the Top 25. It is not often that we are able to get a Big Ten opponent to play in Bowling Green and we are excited about the challenge of opening the Stroh Center against such a talented program. It should be a great atmosphere for our players and fans.”
The first month of the schedule sees the Falcons venture outside of the state of Ohio just once, and that trip is a short one, up Interstate 75 for a game against Detroit (Nov. 11). Six of the Falcons' first nine games will be played in the Stroh Center, beginning with the home opener against Purdue on Thursday, Nov. 17). Evansville (Nov. 20) and Western Kentucky (Nov. 29) also come to Northwest Ohio during the month of November, while the Falcons make trips to Dayton (Nov. 11, for the regular-season opener) and UDM.
Purdue will be the first Big Ten Conference opponent to come to BGSU for a regular-season game in five years. The Falcons' last home regular-season contest vs. a Big Ten school was an 82-47 win over Indiana at Anderson Arena on Dec. 6, 2006.
In December, the Brown and Orange will play three of the first four games at home, before venturing Westward for the final three games of the calendar year. The Falcons host Butler (Dec. 3) to begin the month. After a trip across the state to face Youngstown State (Dec. 6), the Falcons will host Austin Peay (Dec. 9) and Jacksonville (Dec. 11) before taking a break for fall semester exams.
BGSU's last game prior to the Christmas holiday will see the team venture to Omaha, Neb., for a game against Creighton on Dec. 18. The Falcons' final non-conference trip of the season, just prior to New Year's Day, will feature games at Wyoming (Dec. 29) and Colorado State (Dec. 31). The latter game will be a homecoming for Miller, who spent three seasons (1998-2001) in Fort Collins, helped turn the Rams into a Mid-Major power. CSU went 81-20 record during those three years, including a trip to the Sweet Sixteen.
“We have a very difficult portion of the non conference schedule after our first semester finals," said Miller. "Creighton is a Missouri Valley Conference powerhouse. I am also excited about the challenge of playing Wyoming and Colorado State after Christmas. The game versus Colorado State will be an emotional evening for me, as I return to the sidelines in Fort Collins for the first time since serving on (BGSU alum and current Arkansas head coach) Tom Collen's staff.”
Mid-American Conference play will begin with three-straight games in the Stroh Center for Miller's club, as BG hosts Kent State (Jan. 4), Akron (Jan. 7) and Ohio (Jan. 12) in succession. Trips to Buffalo (Jan. 15) and Miami (Jan. 19) end the team's first round-robin foray through the East Division.
The middle third of the MAC schedule sees the Brown and Orange face each of the six teams in the West Division. This season, BGSU will host Eastern Michigan (Jan. 22), Northern Illinois (Feb. 1) and Western Michigan (Feb. 4), while making trips to Ball State (Jan. 25), Central Michigan (Jan. 28) and arch-rival Toledo (Feb. 11). BG's first cross-divisional game, the EMU contest, is a rematch of the 2011 MAC Tournament's championship game. BGSU won by a 51-46 score, capturing the league tourney title for the fifth time in seven years.
The second swing through the East Division begins with a home game vs. Buffalo on Feb. 15. After back-to-back road games vs. Akron (Feb. 18) and Ohio (Feb. 22), Miami will come to town on Feb. 25 for the final home game of the regular season. The schedule comes to a close with a Feb. 28 game at Kent State.
“We have an extremely tough finish to MAC play, with three of our last four conference games on the road,” said Miller. “We hope to be peaking at that time of the year, to enter the MAC Tournament playing our best basketball of the season.”
The MAC Tournament, in the first year under a new format, begins March 3 with first-round games at campus sites. The tourney then shifts to Quicken Loans Arena for the second round (March 7), the quarterfinals (March 8), semifinals (March 9) and championship (March 10).
The fun begins on Tuesday, Nov. 1, with an exhibition game vs. Findlay at the Stroh Center.
The Falcons are coming off of a 28-5 season, in which Miller and Company went 13-3 in the MAC en route to an East Division title. BGSU has won some sort of regular-season crown in each of the last seven seasons, having won the league outright from 2005-10.
BGSU returns 10 letterwinners from last year's club, plus a Division-I transfer (Alexis Rogers) who sat out last year. Miller and his staff – associate head coach Jennifer Roos, assistants Brandi Poole and Kevin Eckert and director of operations Monique Rosati – also welcome five talented freshmen to the Falcon fold.
“We are asking for patience by our great fan base,” said Miller. “This is a young team that will continue to get better throughout the season. The early challenges that we face will certainly help us grow as a team.”
The 2011-12 schedule follows. Miller and the Falcons plan to add one more game to the non-conference schedule. For the most up-to-date schedule throughout the season, click the schedule link on the women's basketball page, or consult the Calendar of Events here at BGSUFalcons.com.
