With the victory, the Falcons of head coach Andy Richards are now 1-3-0 on the young season. The Vikings drop to 2-2-0 on the year.
"We are delighted to get our first win of the year," said Richards. "It's been a long time coming. This is not an easy place to play, and we are very glad to get a result tonight."
Redshirt junior Becca Ison made six saves in goal to earn the first complete-match shutout of her career. Ison had three stops in each period.
"The shutout is another huge bonus for us," said Richards. "It was a great defensive performance by all involved. Obviously, Becca, the back four and the defensive mids deserve a lot of credit. They were very organized and limited Cleveland State to very few shots. I felt their only real chances came from their set pieces."
With just under 20 minutes gone in the match, VonderBrink received a cross from senior Megan Amann and beat CSU 'keeper Becky Williams with a one-timer. That goal would prove to be all that Ison and the BGSU defense would need.
The Falcons were credited with only three shots -- all on goal, and all in the first half -- for the match. The Vikings had nine total shot attempts, including a 5-0 margin in the second period, and CSU had six shots on goal. The Brown and Orange had six corner kicks, and did not concede a single corner to the Vikes.
"We worked very hard in practice this week, and I'm delighted to see the players get their first reward for that week of hard work," said Richards. "We asked them for extra effort and extra commitment, and I think those things were embodied by the goal we scored.
"It looked like the ball was going to go out of play, but Megan did a terrific job of chasing it down, keeping it in play and giving a very good service to 'Vondy'. And, 'Vondy' put the ball away -- low, hard and in the corner, as we love so much.
"We hung on a bit in the second half. I thought we had some chances to make the score two-nil and make things a bit more comfortable. That is something we must continue to work on. We need to execute and put our chances away.
"But, overall, this was a very good result. As I said, this is not an easy place to play, especially playing on turf. We are dellighted to get this result, but we will keep our feet on the ground. We hope this win is a turning point for us, and we look to move onward and upward."
BGSU returns home for a Sunday (Sept. 4) match vs. Niagara University. Starting time for that match is 1:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
