Senior captain nets winner with 1:03 left in 2-1 victory at Buffalo
Senior captain Alyssa Zuccaro scored a pair of goals, the second with just 1:03 left in the second half, to lift the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team to a 2-1, come-from-behind win over the University at Buffalo Friday night (Sept. 23). The Mid-American Conference match was held at UB Stadium.

With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-6-0 overall and 1-0-0 in MAC play. The Bulls drop to 7-2-0 and 0-1-0, respectively.
BGSU has matched the overall win total for all of last season. The Falcons have a 3-3-0 road record in 2011, after posting just one win away from home in 2010.
The Falcons, after allowing a goal just 44 seconds into the match, peppered the Buffalo net with shots for the remainder of the contest. UB goalkeeper Ainsley Wheldon was up to the task for much of the night, but the Falcons finally broke through.
Zuccaro scored to tie the match, on the Falcons' 17th shot attempt of the night, at the 64:25 mark. Then, the captain notched her fourth goal of the year, and second of the night, with 88:57 elapsed. The Falcons did not allow any shots in the final 63 seconds, and BGSU had the road win.
Junior Sarah VonderBrink, who has a history of being involved in 11th-hour BGSU goals, assisted on Zuccaro's winner. Sophomore Ashley Miller had picked up her first career assist on 'Z's first goal of the night.
"We are all delighted with the result tonight," said Falcon head coach Andy Richards. "I am very proud of the way the team played, and impressed by the entire performance and the bravery that they showed throughout the game. It wasn't just physical bravery, but also the mental bravery and toughness that they showed to stick with the game and come back from a goal down."
BGSU outshot Buffalo by a 23-6 count, with a 10-2 margin in the first half and an advantage of 13-4 in the second. Wheldon made 14 saves in net, while BG 'keepers Becca Ison and Laura Arnold combined for two stops. Ison played the first 82-plus minutes, while Arnold entered the game with 7:57 left in the second half and picked up the win without facing a single shot.
Aubrey Stahl scored the Buffalo goal, which came with just 44 seconds gone. It marked the first time in 11 years and a day that BGSU had allowed a goal in the opening minute. On that day, just like on Friday night, the Falcons rallied for a 2-1 road win.
"Buffalo got a great goal, from their perspective," said Richards. "It was a really great strike. It was not the way we wanted to start, but at least we had nearly 90 minutes to get it back.
"I felt that the longer the game went on, the more we got our confidence, and in the second half I really felt we dominated the game."
After Stahl's goal, the Falcons took the next three shots of the match. Stahl had another shot at the 12:43 mark, with Ison making the save, but that was UB's last shot of the opening half. BGSU fired the next seven shot attempts in the period, with six of those shots on frame. The Falcons, however, went to halftime still down by a goal.
As the second half began, little had changed. The Falcons took three shots in the first 3:10 of the period. A VonderBrink effort was saved, Zuccaro's shot went high, and sophomore Kaitlyn Tobin's try was stopped by Weldon. Zuccaro had two more shots before the period was nine minutes old, and senior Megan Amann put a header on goal in the 59th minute, but the UB 'keeper was up to the task.
UB's Karen McMahon saw her shot blocked at the 63:24 mark. That shot was the Bulls' first in over 50 minutes, and snapped a streak of 13 consecutive BGSU shots. The next Falcon shot, however, would do what the first 16 had not - find the back of the net.
In the 65th minute of the match, 'Z' tied the score. She settled a ball at the top of the box and fired BGSU's 17th shot of the night, a shot that beat Wheldon and found the upper part of the net. Miller drew the assist on Zuccaro's first goal of the night.
"We had had several good chances, and then 'Z' popped up with a wonderful strike with her left foot to get us back into the game," said Richards. "It was a goal that we thoroughly deserved.
"Then, we just stuck with it. We defended well, we had a lot of chances and we could have perhaps scored earlier than we did. But, we didn't, and it was up until the last minute when 'Z' popped up again. I know she and the rest of the team are proud about us scoring at the near post."
The captain's second goal of the game, and team-leading fourth of the season, came with 88:57 elapsed. Zuccaro made a run from midfield, got the ball from VonderBrink on the left side of the pitch, and was able to beat Wheldon to the near side. The goal was the fifth game-winner of Zuccaro's career.
"That last minute can sometimes be frantic, like it was against Youngstown State earlier this season," said Richards. "But, I thought we dealt with it calmly and professionally tonight, and we managed to get a road win. Any win, of course, is received well, particularly in the MAC. We are happy to get the win, and now we will look to recover tomorrow and go forth against Kent State on Sunday."
Zuccaro had a total of eight shots on the night, putting four on net, to lead all players in both categories.
The Falcons stay on the road, heading to Northeast Ohio for the aforementioned Sunday (Sept. 25) match vs. Kent State University. That contest is scheduled to begin at 1:00 p.m. at KSU's Zoeller Field.
