KSU breaks seven-year scoreless streak vs. Falcons
Jaclyn Dutton's goal with just under four-and-a-half minutes gone in overtime gave host Kent State University a 1-0 victory over the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team Sunday afternoon (Sept. 25). The Mid-American Conference match was held at Zoeller Field.

With the win, the Golden Flashes improve to 7-3-0 overall and 1-1-0 in MAC action. The Falcons drop to 4-7-0 and 1-1-0, respectively.
Dutton's goal broke several lengthy streaks. Dutton and KSU snapped BGSU's eight-match series unbeaten streak, as the Falcons had not lost to the Flashes since the teams' regular-season meeting in the 2004 season.
Additionally, Dutton's goal was the first by a KSU player against BGSU since 2004. The Falcons' shutout streak vs. the Flashes ended at 841:06, or the equivalent of over nine matches. Prior to Sunday, Kent State's last goal from scrimmage vs. the Brown and Orange had come on Nov. 2, 2004, late in the first half of a MAC Tournament quarterfinal-round match in Kent.
"We are gutted not to get the win today," said BGSU head coach Andy Richards. "I thought there were long periods of the game where we were the better team. In the first half, we had three excellent chances -- which we could and should have finished off -- which would have given us the edge at halftime.
"But, unfortunately, our profligacy in front of goal cost us dearly in the end. We had another great chance in the second half, and when we didn't get that one, it gave Kent State yet another opportunity to win the game with just a single goal."
The goal-scoring sequence began when KSU's Vanessa Salerno tracked down a ball on the left side of the pitch, and found Stephanie Haugh cutting through. Haugh took the ball toward the near post and slotted a pass to Dutton, who found the back of the net with a one-timer.
KSU had a narrow 15-13 advantage in total shot attempts, and each team fired three shots on goal. Dutton's winner was the lone shot attempt of the overtime period.
Kelly Sherwood picked up the shutout in net for the Flashes, making three saves. Junior Laura Arnold had a pair of stops for the Brown and Orange.
"We are very disappointed with the result," said Richards. "That being said, it is very difficult to go on the road for a weekend in the MAC and come away with two wins. So, we will have to live with a one-and-one record, knowing that we could be better and pushing for a two-win weekend the next time out.
"This match is now behind us. We look forward to playing at home this weekend, and we will immediately start preparing for Friday's game."
The Falcons return home for the next three matches, beginning with Friday's (Sept. 30) contest vs. arch-rival Toledo. Kickoff for that match, the second half of a doubleheader, is scheduled for 4:00 p.m. at Cochrane Field.
