With the win, the Vikings improve to 1-1-0 on the season. The Falcons lose for the first time in 2011, dropping to 2-1-0 on the year.
Redshirt sophomore Brandon Silva got one back for the Falcons, scoring just over a minute after CSU's second goal. Silva, who had a career-high four shots in the game, would hit the post with a shot later in the second half, but the home team could not get an equalizer.
Cazz Warren and Admir Suljevic scored the CSU goals. The game's three goals came in a span of just 3:41.
On a scorching-hot day at Cochrane Field -- the temperature at kickoff was 96 degrees -- the Vikings made a miscue right out of the gates. CSU goalkeeper Brad Stuver received a pass from one of his defenders and attempted to clear the ball upfield, but fired it directly to Falcon sophomore Ryan Snashall, however. BG was not able to capitalize, though, as Snashall, approximately 40 yards away from the CSU goal, could not evade a Viking defender and get a shot off before Stuver had scrambled back to his net.
Eleven minutes into the match, junior Zach Lemke somehow eluded a pair of defenders with a spin move, and fired a hard shot from distance, but the ball was wide of the target. Just over a minute later, Stuver did well to punch a Matt Griesinger diagonal ball away, just a split second before junior Rodcliff Hall could get a head on the ball.
CSU's Aaron Adkins had a good chance to put his team on the scoreboard with just under 18 minutes gone, running on to a loose ball and hitting a low, hard shot. But, his effort from 18 yards out went just wide right.
Nearly two-thirds of the way through the period, BGSU sophomore goalie Michael Wiest made a diving grab of a dangerous cross off the boot of Warren. Wiest uncorked a long punt that sailed over all 20 field players and bounced deep in the CSU end of the pitch. BG's Danny Baraldi was the first to reach the ball, but the freshman, nearing the end line with a defender in hot pursuit, could not get a great deal of force behind his shot, and Stuver made the save.
Moments later, Baraldi and sophomore Sam Galloway just missed connections on a give-and-go attempt, as a Viking player stuck his foot in and toe-poked the ball away from Galloway near the 18-yard line.
With seven minutes left before halftime, the Falcons looked to mount another threat, but a dangerous-looking cross from Snashall was blocked in the penalty area.
Only 75 seconds remained in the period when sophomore Zach Schewee made a long run into the box. Schewee somehow kept the ball on his boot as he maneuvered past several CSU players, but a defender got in front of his pass attempt in the area, knocking it out of danger.
In the dying seconds of the first half, the Falcons looked to mount one final attack. From the right side of the pitch, Silva chipped a ball toward the far post. The ball bounced just wide of the left goalpost as the clock reached 0:00, and the teams went to the half locked in a scoreless draw.
Six minutes into the second period, the Falcons had an odd-man rush, with Hall taking a pass from Baraldi and steaming toward goal as Snashall filled a lane as well. With two defenders converging on him, Hall went down as he reached the penalty area, however, and the ball rolled out of bounds for a goal kick.
Two minutes later, Schewee cleared a ball from BG's end of the pitch, finding Hall at midfield. Hall took the ball all the way to the penalty area, firing a shot that was deflected just as he let it go. The ball took a high bounce and nearly caromed into the net, but bounded just wide for one of BGSU's 10 corner kicks on the evening.
Four of those corner kicks came in a span of less than two minutes. The first three were knocked back out of play by CSU, but the fourth found the head of senior Tanner Fink. Fink nodded the ball just wide of the target.
CSU's Caleb Eastham came close to putting his team on the board in the 57th minute. Off of a short corner kick, a diagonal ball from the right side of the field was headed by a Viking player. The ball went to Eastham, stationed about 10 yards away from goal on the left side of the box. But, Eastham's header try sailed over the crossbar.
In the 65th minute, however, the visitors broke through. Christopher Koy slid a right-side cross along the six-yard box, and Warren, with a nifty backheel, redirected the ball into the goal, just inside the left post. That goal came at the 64:38 mark.
One minute later, Wiest made a diving stop on Suljevic, denying the CSU striker on a shot from the top of the box. But, Suljevic would get another chance, and would convert.
Only one minute after his shot was saved, and just 2:18 after Warren's goal, Suljevic picked up a loose ball just outside the penalty area. The ball had come to Suljevic after a BG defender knocked a crossing ball out of the box, but the CSU forward blasted his shot into the net for a two-goal lead.
BGSU responded, however, as Silva picked up his first collegiate goal only 1:23 after Suljevic's score. Sophomore Ryan Comiskey slid a low left-to-right cross into a maze of players in the box. Lemke, with a lunging effort, got a foot on the ball and redirected it past Stuver and toward the goalmouth. From a yard away, Silva rammed the ball into the open net to cut his team's deficit in half. That goal came at 68:19.
With 16 minutes remaining, Silva very nearly scored again. Baraldi launched a long free kick into the danger zone, and Silva nodded it out of the reach of Stuver. But, the ball deflected off of the far (right) post and bounced away.
Lemke gave the Falcons a good scoring chance with seven minutes on the clock. BG had taken the ball into the CSU end before losing possession. But, Lemke stepped in to take the ball away from his opponent, and the redshirt junior quickly fired a low shot through traffic and toward the far post. Stuver, however, was able to see the shot all the way, and the CSU junior made the save.
With the Falcons pressing forward in the final minutes, the Vikings had several chances to score on counterattacks. With four minutes left, a long shot by Suljevic nearly caught Wiest straying from his goalmouth. The 50-yard shot, however, landed on top of the goal. Then, in the 90th minute, a 3-on-1 was broken up by the BG defense, as Warren's shot was blocked.
BG worked the ball into the CSU end in the remaining seconds, but the Brown and Orange could not get another shot toward goal, and the Vikings held on for the win.
CSU held a narrow 15-13 advantage in shot attempts, including a 7-3 margin in shots on goal. Stuver made two saves in earning the victory, while Wiest had five saves in the match.
BGSU was whistled for 16 fouls to the Vikings' 15, , and the Falcons had 10 corner kicks to Cleveland State's eight.
Silva led all players with four shot attempts, while Lemke and three CSU players had three apiece. Adkins, Suljevic and Warren each put two of their three shot attempts on frame.
The Brown and Orange will hit the road for the next five matches, beginning with a trip to Western Pennsylvania next weekend. The Falcons will participate in the Pitt/Nike Invitational, taking on Duquesne on Friday (Sept. 9) and host Pittsburgh on Sunday (Sept. 11).
