Riding The Wave
The Falcons come into 2012-13 with a ton of momentum from the previous season. Bowling Green finished the year with a magical run in the 2012 CCHA Playoffs, defeating Northern Michigan in the first round, before knocking out No. 1 ranked Ferris round two. The Falcons' trip to Joe Louis Arena for the CCHA Semifinals marked the first time an 11th seed ever reached Joe Louis Arena, and the first trip for BG since 2000-01.
DeSavior Returns
Dan DeSalvo also starts the season with a ton of momentum, after one of the most memorable playoff runs in Bowling Green/ CCHA history. DeSalvo scored 10 goals in the Falcons' playoff run, including a hat trick in the series-clinching game against Ferris State. DeSalvo's three-goal effort marked the first Falcon to record a hat-trick since Derek Whitmore, in a 4-1 win against Western Michigan (Jan. 18, 2008) at the BGSU Ice Arena.
DeSavior Returns (Part Two)
DeSalvo now also holds the CCHA record for playoff goals (10), breaking the previous record of 8 held by three players. Former Michigan Wolverine Mike Knuble (1995), Bobby Reynolds (1988 - Michigan State) and Rick Brebant (1987 - Ohio State) previously held the record.
Opening Act
Bowling Green opened last season with a 2-1 victory against Connecticut at the BGSU Ice Arena. Ryan Carpenter lit-the-lamp for the Falcons, marking the first freshman to score in a season-opening game since Kevin Schmidt back in 2005-06. Bryce Williamson also scored for the Orange and Brown, while Andrew Hammond made 20 saves on 21 shots.
Opening Day Quick Facts
In BGSU history, the Falcons are 23-20 on opening day. Over the past 11 season-opening games, the Falcons have played six contests at home and five on the road. Bowling Green owns a record of 4-2 at home, while only managing a record of 1-4 on the road.
Hammond Is Back
Senior Andrew Hammond returns after a stellar season for the Orange...(Cont.)
and Brown, recording a personal best 14 wins. Hammond started all 44 games between the pipes for the Falcons, setting the BG single-season record for minutes played with 2,615:18. Hammond finished 2011-12 with eight games of 30 saves or more, three games with 40 saves or more and two games with 50 saves or more.
30-point Club
Carpenter led Bowling Green with 30 points this past season, posting 11 goals and a team-high 19 assists in 44 games played. Carpenter is the first Falcon to score 30 points in a season since the 2008-09 campaign, when Brandon Svendsen (30) and Dan Sexton (39) broke the 30-point mark.
Return Of The Captains
Carpenter and junior Cam Wojtala have been named captains for 2012-13, after the Falcons did not select a captain last season. 2011-12 marked the first season in the history of the program that Bowling Green did not select a captain. Wojtala had the best season of his career last year, recording 10 goals and 13 assists for a career best 23 points.
The New Guys
This year marks the smallest recruiting class for the Falcons since the arrival of Chris Bergeron. Six freshmen hit the ice for Bowling Green this season, along with two sophomore carry overs from last season. Sophomores Derek Hills and Dajon Mingo join freshmen Mark Cooper, Ben Murphy, Ralfs Freibergs, Jose Delgadillo, Tommy Burke and Brent Tate to make up the new Falcon faces of 2012-13.
Wallace Dominates The Circle
Junior Andrew Wallace had the best season of his collegiate career last year, securing six points (1G and 5A) in 43 games. Wallace's biggest impact was in the faceoff circle, winning 369 draws last season. His .587 winning percentage was the best among BG centers, with Michael Fink's .500 winning percentage ranking second on the team.
Frozen Four Foes
BGSU plays host to 2012 Frozen Four participants Union College on Oct. 16-17 and Ferris State on Nov. 16-17.
National Exposure
The Falcons will play four nationally televised games this season. They will appear on Comcast twice, Nov. 2 against Michigan State, and Nov. 21 against Michigan. Bowling Green's second contest against Michigan will then be broadcast on the Big Ten Network, before FOX Sports Detroit showcases the Falcons and Ferris State Bulldogs on Feb. 16. All of the Falcons' nationally televised games in 2012-13 are on the road.
Preseason Love
The CCHA released its preseason coaches/media poll earlier this week, picking the Falcons to finish eighth and ninth, respectively. The Falcons and Northern Michigan actually earned a tie for the eighth spot in the coaches poll, edging out Alaska (10) and Lake Superior State (11). Bowling Green also edged out Alaska (11) and Lake Superior (10) in the media poll, falling slightly behind Northern Michigan in the eight spot.

Preseason Love (Part 2)
This season marks the first time the Falcons have not been picked to finish last in the preseason poll since 2008-09, when Bowling Green was picked seventh (media) and ninth (coaches).
Returning Goals
The Falcons scored a CCHA-low 85 goals last season, combining with 128 assists for 213 total points. The good news is that almost all of those goal scorers are returning. The returning members of the Orange and Brown were responsible for 77 total goals last season, good enough for 90.5 percent of their total. Bowling Green also returns 199 points (93.4 percent) from last season.
CCHA Recognition
The USCHO released its National Poll earlier in the month, naming several CCHA schools in the first poll of the season. Michigan claimed the highest spot with a 3rd place ranking, with Miami (9), Western Michigan (10) and Ferris (11) also breaking the top-15. Notre Dame (14) and Michigan State (16) also cracked the top-20.
Niagara Focus - 2011-12 Leaders
Niagara Focus: Giancarlo Iuorio (Courtesy of Atlantic Hockey)
Key Statistics: Iuorio has an opportunity to join Niagara's 100-point club with a good showing during his senior year and if he can manage to stay healthy – he's missed 20 collegiate games due to injury (shoulder, knee, high ankle sprain), including six last season. In 88 career games he has 24 goals, 44 assists and 68 points. Niagara coach Dave Burkholder is convinced Iuorio would have won his team's scoring title outright if he stayed healthy. As a junior, he produced 10 goals and 24 points, evenly splitting 18 points in league play. His previous career high was nine goals as a sophomore with a whopping 24 assists. His rookie year netted five goals and 11 points. Iuorio played with the Markham Waxers in the Ontario junior circuit, posting 51 goals and 119 points in 104 career games. During his final year in juniors (2008-09) he posted 28 goals, 41 assists and was named to the OPJHL Central Division all-star team.
What He Does: Iuorio is penciled in as a left winger but he can play any position up front. He understands the game well and is able to make plays. A top-six forward, Iuorio played the right point on the power play, taking the opportunity to unleash his above-average shot. He also spent a lot of time playing with Marc Zanette on the penalty kill. As dependable as he is on offense, Iuorio does not forget his defensive duties.
