York Passes Mason, Becomes All-Time Wins Leader
December 29, 2012 | Ice Hockey
Minneapolis, Minn.—Boston College's head ice hockey coach, Jerry York, won his 925th game Saturday night, surpassing Ron Mason as college hockey's all-time wins leader. York and Mason have both called Bowling Green home, coaching the Falcons at different stints during their incredible college hockey careers.
York inherited the Orange and Brown from Mason in 1979 after coaching at Clarkson College of Technology, where he compiled a 125-87-3 record. As Bowling Green's head coach from 1979-1994, York guided the Falcons to four first-place regular season conference finishes, and a CCHA Playoff Championship in 1988.
York will always be remembered for leading the Falcons to the 1984 NCAA Championship game, where they defeated Minnesota-Duluth (5-4) for the school's only National Championship. Bowling Green's win marked the first National Championship for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association.
Over 15 seasons, York compiled an overall record of 342-248-31, earning a .576 winning percentage during his time behind the Bowling Green bench. York's 342 wins as head coach of the Orange and Brown rank first all time in the history of the program, with Mason's 160 victories over six years ranking a distant second.
York left Bowling Green and returned to his alma mater, Boston College, in 1994. He has since gone on to win four more National Championships, putting his career coaching record at 925-559-95.
