BOWLING GREEN, Ohio. – The Bowling Green State University hockey team lost to the University of Michigan Saturday night, falling to the Wolverines by a score of 3-0 on senior night. The Falcons failed to convert on nine power plays in the contest, while junior goaltender Andrew Hammond stopped an incredible 46-of-48 shots in the loss.
The Wolverines pressured the Falcons right out of the gate, throwing tons of rubber towards the Bowling Green cage. Michigan dominated the shot department through the first two periods, outshooting Bowling Green 31-15 through 40 minutes of play.
With just under 15 minutes to go in the third period, Michigan senior David Wohlberg broke the scoring drought, netting a goal off of an offensive zone draw. Freshman Alex Guptill won the faceoff back to Wohlberg, who wristed the puck past Hammond for his 13th goal of the year, giving Michigan the 1-0 lead.
Michigan struck again just three minutes later, as junior Kevin Lynch stuffed home his seventh goal of the season after a scrum in front of the Bowling Green net.
Trailing the Wolverines 2-0, Bowling Green pulled Hammond in favor of an extra attacker. However, Michigan took advantage of the empty net, tallying an empty-net goal at the 17:51 mark of the third period. The final tally from Michigan sophomore Mac Bennett marked his fourth goal of the season, and gave the Wolverines the 3-0 win.
The shutout loss marks the sixth time this season Bowling Green has been held off the score sheet, and the second time in the last four games at the BGSU Ice Arena.
Hammond's 46-save performance in the loss sets a new career, trumping his previous high of 44 saves, which was accomplished twice last season.
The 5,031 fans who attended Saturday's game marks the largest crowd in the history of the BGSU Ice Arena, breaking the previous total of 5,021 (Dec. 2, 1995).
The loss drops the Falcons' overall record to 10-21-5, with a record of 5-19-4-3 in conference play. The win improves Michigan's record to 21-11-4 overall, with a record of 15-9-4-1 in CCHA action.
The Falcons will travel to Northern Michigan next weekend for the first round of the CCHA playoffs. Bowling Green defeated Northern Michigan in the first round of the playoffs last year, but lost both games to the Wildcats earlier this season.
