Complete release from MAC Office
Wiest, a native of Naperville, Ill. (Naperville North H.S.), had a goals-against average of just 0.42 and a saves percentage of .900 in last week's two games, helping the Falcons to a 1-0-1 record. In Tuesday's (Oct. 22) match at Wright State, Wiest had four saves in the Falcons' 1-0, double-overtime victory. The shutout was the 20th of his career. Then, he had five stops in BG's 1-1, double-OT draw vs. Hartwick on Saturday night (Oct. 26) at Cochrane Field.
Wiest now has a GAA of just 0.74 and a saves percentage of .829 this season. He has seven shutouts this fall, and has a GAA of just 0.46 and a saves pct. of .875 in MAC matches this fall to date. Wiest is the first Falcon 'keeper to post six or more shutouts in three consecutive seasons since BGSU Hall-of-Famer Scott Vallow (1995-98).
As mentioned, the honor was the second for Wiest in as many days. On Tuesday (Oct. 29), the College Sports Madness web site named Wiest its MAC Player of the Week.
The MAC Scholar-Athlete-of-the-Week award is presented to one male and one female student-athlete each week. To be eligible, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade-point average of 3.00 or higher, and must have performed well during the previous week's competition. The winners are selected by the conference's faculty athletics representatives.
Wiest, a physical education teacher education major at BGSU, has a cumulative GPA of 3.500.
Wiest and the Falcons (5-6-5 overall, 2-1-1 MAC) head to Kalamazoo for a key MAC matchup this weekend. BGSU faces Western Michigan on Saturday afternoon (Nov. 2), with first touch set for 1:00 p.m. After a non-conference home game vs. IPFW on Tuesday, Nov. 5, the regular-season schedule comes to a close with a MAC match at West Virginia on Friday night, Nov. 8.
