Buffalo, N.Y. - The Bowling Green State University swim team continued its success at the Mid-American Conference Championships, improving to a third-place standing after the second day of competition with a total of 327 points.
The Falcons were led in the championship finals by school-record performances in the 200 medley relay, 100 backstroke (Alexa Harris), 100 breaststroke (Daniela Carrillo) and 200 freestyle (Joëlle Scheps).
"We swam a lot better tonight," said head coach Petra Martin. "We really got the job done and we're excited to be sitting in third place. We've got one more day ahead of us and we're going to work like there's no tomorrow."
Bowling Green started the night with a third-place finish in the 200 medley relay, with a team of Harris, Alexis Kain, Jordan Bullock and Emily Bennet swimming a school-record time of 1:40.52 - more than a second faster than the previous BGSU record.
Later in the evening, Joëlle Scheps swam a school record time in the 200 freestyle final. Scheps improved upon her time in prelims, touching in 1:48.93 to finish third. Teammates Emily Waller (1:50.90) and Hannah Newman (1:53.02) also advanced to the championship final, finishing seventh and eighth, respectively.
Carrillo and Kain were a powerful pair in the 100 breaststroke final, finishing second and third with times that eclipsed the previous BGSU record held by Kain. Carrillo smashed her previous personal best, touching in 1:00.84, just shy of a MAC title. Kain was close behind, also swimming a career best of 1:01.22. Both times eclipsed the NCAA "B" standard.
Harris was the lone Falcon in the championship final of the 100 backstroke. After nearly breaking the school record in prelims, Harris swam a 54.49 in the final to break the record and earn a third-place finish. Harris's time met the NCAA "B" standard for the event. In the consolation final, Bennet and Haley Roberts each swam career-best times of 56.36 and 56.91 to finish 12th and 16th.
Stephanie Boyle built on her strong showing from night one with a fifth-place finish in the 400 IM to lead the Falcons. Boyle swam a time of 4:21.90 - the second-fastest mark in school history. Nicole Hranchook, competing in the consolation final, swam a personal-best 4:26.00 to finish 13th overall.
Bullock and Brittany Szekely represented the Falcons in the consolation final for the 100 butterfly, each swimming personal best times to finish 10th and 13th. Bullock's time of 55.35 is the third fastest in school history, while Szekely's mark of 55.80 put her in sixth all-time at BGSU.
The Falcons wrapped things up with a third-place showing in the 800 freestyle relay, with Scheps, Waller, Jen Beatty and Newman touching in 7:23.87 - just shy of the school record of 7:23.27.
At the end of the night, the Falcons improved to third place overall, trailing second-place Ohio by just ten points. Miami sits in first place after the second day, with a total of 436 points. The final day of MAC Championship action is Saturday, with races in the 1650 freestyle, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and 400 freestyle relay, as well as 3-meter diving.
