CLEVELAND, Ohio—The Mid-American Conference announced the 2014 football schedule today, releasing conference dates and select kickoff times. Bowling Green's schedule will be highlighted by two Big Ten Conference foes, including Indiana inside of Doyt Perry Stadium on Sept. 13 for Family Weekend. The Falcons will host Buffalo on Oct. 4 for Homecoming.
"We are really excited about our 2014 schedule," head coach Dino Babers said. "Our schedule will challenge us and make us better as we work to defend the 2013 MAC Championship. Our fans will have the opportunity to come support us six times inside Doyt Perry Stadium, and we look forward to our fans traveling with us on the road, as well."
Babers will lead the Falcons onto the field for the first time on Aug. 28, when the Falcons travel to Bowling Green, Ky. for a showdown with Western Kentucky. Last season, the Hilltoppers finished the season 8-4. WKU had one of the best defenses in the nation, allowing less than 340 yards per game. Jeff Brohm is in his first season at Western Kentucky. Bowling Green is 1-0 all-time against WKU, defeating them 41-21 in 2007 at The Doyt.
The next weekend, the Falcons will host Virginia Military Institute in the home opener (Sept. 6) at Doyt L. Perry Stadium. The Keydets are coached by Sparky Woods. BGSU and VMI have never met in football.
On Sept. 13, the Falcons will host Indiana for Family Weekend. The contest with IU will mark the first time that Bowling Green has hosted a Big Ten Conference team in more than six years. The last time BGSU hosted a Big Ten foe was on Sept. 6, 2008, when the Falcons fell to Minnesota. The Falcons and Hoosiers met for the first time in program history last season on the gridiron, with IU defeating Bowling Green at Memorial Stadium in Bloomington, Ind.
The Falcons will then travel to Wisconsin for a second straight showdown with a Big Ten Conference opponent (Sept. 20). Wisconsin finished the 2013 season 9-4 with an appearance in the Capital One Bowl. The matchup at Wisconsin will mark the first time that BGSU has played two consecutive Big Ten foes since beginning the 2007 season with consecutive road games at Minnesota and Michigan State. Bowling Green has never defeated the Badgers, going 0-3 all-time. The two teams last played in 2006, when UW defeated the Falcons 35-14 at Cleveland Browns Stadium.
The Mid-American Conference portion of the schedule will begin with a Sept. 27 trip to UMass. The Falcons are 2-0 all-time against the Minutemen, having defeated them each of the past two seasons. UMass will be led by first year head coach Mark Whipple, who is in his second stint with the Minutemen.
Bowling Green will host the University at Buffalo on Oct. 4 for Homecoming. A complete list of Homecoming promotions and events will be released at a later date. Last season, the Falcons defeated Buffalo 24-7 in the regular season finale to clinch the MAC East title last season. All-time, BGSU is 8-3 against the Bulls.
Another MAC East showdown will take place the next weekend, when the Falcons travel to Athens for a matchup with the Ohio Bobcats (Oct. 11). Last season, Bowling Green defeated the Bobcats 49-0 at Doyt Perry Stadium. The Falcons have won two straight in the series, and lead the overall series 38-25-2. Buffalo, who featured the MAC's second best defense a season ago, made an appearance in the Famous Idaho Potato Bowl after an 8-4 regular season in 2013.
BGSU will host Western Michigan on Oct. 18 in the first of three cross-divisional matchups against West Division teams. WMU is coached by second year head coach P.J. Fleck. The Broncos were 1-11 in 2013. The two teams have not met since 2011, and Bowling Green is 31-17-3 against WMU all-time.
The Falcons will then have 16 days off before traveling to Akron for a National-TV showdown with the Zips. Akron finished 5-7 in 2013, winning the final three games of the season. Third year head coach Terry Bowden has turned the Akron program around, as the Zips finished last season by winning four of the final five games after a 1-6 start.
The next week, Bowling Green will host Kent State at 8:00 p.m. (Nov. 12) for a Wednesday night showdown on National TV. The Falcons and Golden Flashes have played entertaining games over the past two seasons. In 2012, KSU defeated Bowling Green in a game which decided the MAC East champion. Last season, the Falcons went to Kent and defeated the Golden Flashes 41-22 in an early season showdown. BGSU is 56-19-6 all-time against Kent State.
The Battle Of I-75 will resume the following Wednesday (Nov. 19), when Bowling Green takes the short trip up to Toledo to take on the Rockets in another National TV matchup. Toledo is coached by third year head coach Matt Campbell. The Rockets finished the 2013 season at 7-5 and did not participate in a bowl game.
The regular season will conclude with a showdown between Bowling Green and Ball State at Doyt Perry Stadium on Nov. 28 (Friday). Ball State finished the 2013 season 10-3, losing in the GoDaddy Bowl. The Falcons and Cardinals have not played since 2009, and BGSU leads the all-time series 20-8-1.
