Dufour and Walker Earn WCHA Weekly Honors

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio -- A pair of freshmen for the Bowling Green State University men's ice hockey team have been rewarded for their strong play over the final weekend of the regular season. Kevin Dufour and Sean Walker were both named Western Collegiate Hockey Association Players of the Week, the league announced Tuesday (March 11) afternoon.
The duo led the Falcons to a 2-0-0 record over Bemidji State University in the final weekend of the regular season at the BGSU Ice Arena, earning all possible four points against the Beavers to help secure home ice entering the first round of the 2014 WCHA Playoffs. Both Dufour and Walker combined for four goals and four assists over the weekend, while each accounted for a plus-1 on-ice rating against BSU.
Two forwards who turned in stellar weekends – Cody Kunyk of University of Alaska and Kevin DuFour of Bowling Green State University, have been named WCHA Men's co-Offensive Players of the Week for March 11, 2014.
Dufour, a 6-0, 190-pound freshman from Quebec City, Quebec, totaled three goals and an assist to lead Bowling Green to a two-game sweep over Bemidji State over the final weekend of the regular season. The freshman also finished with a +1 on-ice rating and totaled five shots on net, helping the Falcons secure home ice in the first round of the WCHA playoffs.
Dufour started the weekend with a goal and an assist in a 5-3 Falcons' win last Friday and was the first star of the game. He then followed on Saturday with two power-play goals, helping the Falcons sweep the Beavers and again earning first star of the game.
Overall this season, Dufour leads all rookies on the Falcon roster with 16 points (9g, 7a). He also 34 shots on goal and a +6 on-ice rating in 34 games.
A 5-9, 185-pound freshman from Keswick, Ontario, Walker scored a game-winning goal, produced three assists, totalled four points, earned a +1 on-ice rating, and fired two shots on goal in helping Bowling Green secure home ice for the first round of WCHA playoffs.
Bowling Green State University defenseman Sean Walker, who made strong contributions at both ends of the ice in a two-game sweep over Bemidji State last weekend, has been named the WCHA Men's Rookie of the Week for March 11, 2014.
Walker opened the two-game set on Friday (March 7) evening with a game-winning goal and an assist in the Falcons' 5-3 triumph over the Beavers. He also had a blocked shot, a +1 on-ice rating, and was named the third star of the game.
Then last Saturday (March 8) night, Walker came back with two assists in helping the Falcons earn the sweep over Bemidji State with a 5-2 triumph.
Walker, who has a 2013-14 season total of 13 points (2g, 11a), has scored at least one point in his last four games. The rookie has scored six of his 11 points over the last two weeks, playing a key role in the Falcons' playoff push.
Senior defenseman Scott Czarnowczan of Ferris State was named the league's Defensive Player of the Week. Czarnowczan played a pivotal role in a two-game sweep over Lake Superior State that gave the Bulldogs the WCHA regular season championship and the MacNaughton Cup. The senior tallied three points over the weekend against the Lakers with one goal and two assists to secure a regualar season title.
The Orange and Brown enter the WCHA playoffs with a 16-14-6 overall record and a 13-11-4 mark in league play. With 30 points, the Falcons earned the No. 4 seed in a tightly-bunched group of teams fighting for playoff positioning, earning home ice for the opening round for the first time since the 2007-08 season. The Orange and Brown will welcome fifth-seeded Michigan Tech to the BGSU Ice Arena this weekend (March 14-16), as the Huskies went 2-1-1 against Bowling Green in the regular season. The best-of-three series will begin at 7:07 p.m. on Friday night.
