BGSU’s Rinker Tabbed MAC Freshman of the Year; Totals Three Conference Awards
May 04, 2014 | Men's Golf
Cleveland, Ohio – Bowling Green State University freshman Brett Rinker was tabbed the 2014 Mid-American Conference Men's Golf Freshman of the Year, highlighting a total of three conference postseason awards garnered by the Pennsylvania native in his first season as a Falcon.
Rinker becomes the first Falcon to be named the MAC Freshman of the Year since the award started in 1994.
On top of the MAC Freshman of the Year Award, Rinker was named to the All-MAC Second-Team and also earned a spot on the MAC Championship All-Tournament Team with his top-five finish at the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Championships.
Rinker's Second-Team All-MAC honor marks the second straight year in which the Falcons have had a golfer receive all-conference accolades as Wes Gates earned Second-Team honors last season (2012-13). He becomes the seventh Falcon all-time to earn All-MAC Second-Team recognition.
In only his first year at BGSU, Rinker was the top-Falcon golfer in five of the 10 tournaments this season. He posted five top-10 finishes overall, including finishing the year out with a fourth-place finish at The Greenbrier Collegiate Invitational, a ninth-place showing at the Rutherford Intercollegiate and a fifth-place finish at the 2014 MAC Men's Golf Championships.
Rinker led the team with a 73.26 stroke average on the season, which ranks second all-time behind only Garry Winger for the lowest single season stroke average in BGSU's history. He posted six sub-par rounds of golf on the season, including shooting a low round 67 at the Old Dominion/OBX Collegiate in the fall.
