Blogging With Brooke: Heading To Kamloops
August 07, 2014 | Women's Track and Field
BGSU senior hammer thrower Brooke Pleger will represent the Falcons when she competes for Team USA at the U-23 North American, Central American and Caribbean (NACAC) International Athletics Championship in Kamloops, British Columbia Aug. 8-10. Pleger will compete in the hammer throw on Aug. 8 at 7:20 pm. But prior to that, she has the unique opportunity to train at the Olympic Training Center in Chula Vista, Calif. During that time, Pleger will be checking in with BGSUFalcons.com and blogging about her trip. This is her second entry.

Monday, Aug. 4/Tuesday, Aug. 5
Monday and Tuesday were both fairly uneventful days. We have moved from the training center to a hotel about fifteen minutes away. Both days we were shuttled over to the training center for breakfast, workouts, and then lunch. Around 1:30-2pm we left from the training center and came back to hang out at the hotel.
Monday practice was a little rough. We had spent the day before at the zoo, so I figured I might be a little bit off from all the walking. It felt good to get out and take my throws and get a solid lift in. It was a full day of training.Tuesday I cut back some on my throws (didn't take as much volume). They felt better than what they did on Monday, but still not quite where I want them to be. After finishing my lift and having some lunch we headed back to the hotel to hang out for the rest of the day. Both Monday and Tuesday Brittany (Funk) and I spent most of the afternoon just relaxing in the hotel. After the busy week we had, it felt good to just relax. I am really excited because we leave for Canada tomorrow! I am anxious to meet the whole USA U23 NACAC team. I compete Friday, and I couldn't be more excited to put on my USA jersey and represent my country!

Wednesday, Aug. 6
Wednesday morning started off with breakfast at the hotel. Brittany and I finished packing up all of our stuff so we could head to the airport and start the journey to Kamloops. I was darn near ready to throw away half of my clothes when I was trying to pack my bags up. Every time I thought I had everything together, I would find ten articles of clothing that had not been packed yet. Needless to say, it was less than fun.
We left the hotel around 10:30 to head to the airport. After we checked our bags and made it through security we had some time to waste. I spent my time on the phone since I knew when we got into Canada there would be no more cell service unless I wanted to pay a big fee. Once we boarded the plane I discovered my sad fate of having a middle seat. Luckily I sat in between two very nice Canadian ladies. Our first flight took us into Calgary, and when we landed we had to go through customs. I had only gone through customs one other time in my life when I went to Italy my sophomore year in high school, so it was an experience. Thankfully we were able to get our bags and get through fairly quickly so we didn't miss our flight to Kamloops.
Once we arrived in Kamloops, the World's smallest airport, we collected our bags and got into the shuttles that were taking us to the University. We are staying in dorms at Thompson Rivers University, which is also where the meet will be taking place starting on Friday. It was a fairly quick drive, and once we arrived we were briefed on the plans for Thursday. We got assigned our rooms and after a long day of traveling, went right to bed.
