BGSU Women Earn Mid-American Conference’s FAR Award For Highest GPA
September 03, 2014 | General
Cleveland, Ohio – For the fourth time in the past six years, Bowling Green State University's female student-athletes earned the Mid-American Conference's Faculty Athletics Representative (FAR) Academic Achievement Award. The honor recognizes the program in the MAC whose female student-athletes show the best academic achievement in the conference.
"We are tremendously proud to be awarded the Women's FAR Academic Achievement Award," Lesley Irvine, Senior Associate Athletics Director and Senior Woman Administrator, said. "We would like to congratulate our female student-athletes for their outstanding performance in the classroom. It is a remarkable accomplishment to have won this award in four of the last six years. This success points to the culture of academic excellence, support and achievement that have come to define women's athletics teams here at BGSU."
The FAR Award is computed using the same ranking method as the long-time Reese and Jacoby trophies (traditionally awarded to the best overall male and female athletic programs in the MAC). The award is given to those institutions with the highest overall GPA rank points within the conference and only MAC-sponsored sports are used. BGSU carried the highest league GPA in women's basketball, golf, soccer and swimming and diving during the 2013-14 academic year.
The award was established in 2007-08 and during those seven years, BGSU has been awarded four times and Central Michigan has been honored in the other three years. Bowling Green is the only back-to-back winner in MAC history, having done that in 2008-09 and 2009-10. BGSU was also honored in 2011-12.
Bowling Green sponsors 11 women's sports, all of which compete in the MAC. Those sports are basketball, cross country, golf, gymnastics, soccer, softball, swimming and diving, tennis, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, and volleyball.
