January 22, 2018 | Ice Hockey
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – After a career-best performance against Alaska Anchorage, Bowling Green hockey's freshman forward Brandon Kruse has been named Rookie of the Week by the Western Collegiate Hockey Association.
A native of Saline, Mich., Kruse earned four points on the weekend by one goal and three assists against Alaska Anchorage, and comes off the weekend on a two-game point streak. By notching the game-winning goal in addition to a pair of assists, Kruse earned a career-high three-point night on Saturday against the Seawolves. By netting the game-winner with just 6:53 remaining in regulation, Kruse helped lift the Falcons to a 3-2 victory and sweep of the WCHA foe.
Earlier in the evening, Kruse helped the Falcons erase a two-goal deficit by assisting on both Chris Pohlkamp's first goal since Oct. 31, 2015, as well as on fellow freshman Max Johnson's seventh goal of the season to tie the game at 2-2. In the opening game of the series, Kruse assisted on Mitch McLain's team-leading 12th goal of the season that put the Falcons up 4-1 over Alaska Anchorage, on its way to earning the 6-2 victory. On the weekend, Kruse's four points came in addition to three shots on goal and a plus-3 rating on the ice.
The WCHA Rookie of the Week honor marks Kruse's first WCHA accolade of his career.
The No. 15 Bowling Green hockey program will be back in action this weekend as it travels to Sault Ste. Marie, Mich. to take on Lake Superior State in more WCHA action. Puck drop is set for 7:07 p.m. on Jan. 26 and Jan. 27.
