MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. – Bowling Green hockey's senior captain Mitch McLain has been nominated for the 2018 Hockey Humanitarian Award. The award is presented annually to college hockey's finest citizen – a student-athlete who makes significant contributions not only to his or her team, but also to the community-at-large through leadership and volunteerism.
One of 11 nominees, McLain captains for the 2017-18 season after being an All-WCHA First Team selection in his junior campaign. In addition to his leadership and sportsmanship, McLain holds academics and community service to high standards for the entire Falcon hockey program.
McLain has led the Bowling Green team, is a full-time student, and student teaches at Woodlane School in Bowling Green, Ohio. McLain's involvement with his special education students and with the Bowling Green hockey program join annually, as he connects the students with the team when he organizes a field trip in which they visit the Slater Family Ice Arena. In addition to volunteering more than 150 hours at Woodlane, McLain has also worked with the Crim Elementary Reading Tutor Program and its first grade students and has coordinated fundraisers and activities including the Rally Cap and Special Olympic Bowling.
A Mild-to-Moderate Intervention Specialist major, McLain holds a 3.515 GPA entering his final semester at BGSU. The captain is a two-time WCHA All-Academic honoree, in addition to being a WCHA Scholar-Athlete for the 2016-17 campaign, and while he was a Dean's List student, McLain was also recognized as an All-American Scholar Athlete by the American Hockey Coaches Association for his 2016-17 academic successes.
