January 29, 2018 | Ice Hockey
BLOOMINGTON, Minn. – After its sweep of Lake Superior State, a pair of Falcons from the Bowling Green hockey program garnered weekly awards from the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, announced Monday afternoon. Both with four-point performances in the series, senior Tyler Spezia was named WCHA Offensive Player of the Week, while freshman Brandon Kruse was honored as WCHA Rookie of the Week.
A native of Clinton Township, Mich., Spezia led the Falcons with four points on the weekend by three goals and one assist. Posting multi-point performances both nights, Spezia helped the Falcons to a sweep of Lake Superior State with eight shots on goal and a plus-3 rating on the ice. On Friday night, Spezia scored the Falcons third goal of the second period, in addition to assisting on Brandon Kruse's game-winning goal just five minutes prior. On Saturday night, the Clinton Township, Mich. native earned his second career multi-goal game by notching two of the Falcons three goals on the night, including the game-winner.
Named to his second consecutive WCHA Rookie of the Week award is freshman forward Brandon Kruse, as he extended his point streak to four straight games with his four points in the sweep of Lake Superior State. A native of Saline, Mich., Kruse tallied the game-winning goal on Friday night, before marking assists on all three of the Falcons goals on Saturday evening. The three points ties Kruse's career-high, set two games back against Alaska Anchorage (Jan. 20). Kruse completed the weekend with three shots on goal and a plus-1 rating on the ice, in addition to marking his game-winning goal on Friday and assist on the game-winner on Saturday.
The WCHA Offensive Player of the Week recognition is the first of the season for Spezia, and first WCHA weekly honor since a WCHA Rookie of the Week nod in the 2014-15 season. It is the second consecutive WCHA Rookie of the Week award for Kruse, and second of his career.
The Bowling Green hockey program will be back in action at home this weekend as it hosts WCHA rival Michigan Tech in the final homestand of the regular season. Puck drop is set for 7:37 p.m. on Friday, Feb. 2, while Senior Night will take place in a 7:07 p.m. start on Saturday, Feb. 3.
