Lemke qualified for the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top ten of both events last week at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships. She placed fifth last Thursday in the one-meter with 576.60 points, then took ninth place on Friday in the three-meter with 561.70 points. She became the first athlete from the BGSU swimming and diving program to qualify for nationals since Daniela Carrillo in 2016 and the second since 1996. She is the first Falcon diver to qualify since Mary Pfeiffer in 1998.
"I'm very excited. It's going to be a great atmosphere, having so many great divers there. I can learn by watching and practicing with them, and I'm really anxious just for the competition to start."
At the 2018 Mid-American Conference Championships, Lemke helped lead Bowling Green to an improvement of one place in the team standings over the previous season. She won the MAC championship in one-meter diving and became the Falcons' first conference winner in diving since 1992. She also placed second in the three-meter competition.
Lemke will be one of 41 divers and one of only two from the MAC at the NCAA Championships. Among her opponents at this week's meet, her qualifying score ranked 18th in the one-meter and 28th in the three-meter. Each diver gets six dives in the preliminary round. The divers with the 16 best cumulative scores in the prelims advance to the finals, with 1st through 8th going to the championship round and 9th through 16th going to the consolation final.
BGSU diving coach Tricia Grant said, "We both know how hard the competition will be, but she's prepared for it. This year, all I want is for her to have fun and enjoy it. I think she could go All-American, she's absolutely capable of that."
