Brown, East Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
March 26, 2018 | Baseball, General, Gymnastics
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Kody Brown and gymnast Jovannah East.
Male Athlete of the Week
Kody Brown, a senior left-handed pitcher from Perrysburg, Ohio, turned in an outstanding week on the mound, as Bowling Green won its MAC opening series and went 3-1 on the week. Brown made three relief appearances on the week, picking up a win over Dayton, before registering two saves against Ohio to help the Falcons claim the weekend series. In total, Brown worked 6.1 innings, allowing just one hit and one run while striking out five batters and issuing just one walk. Brown pitched a perfect ninth inning against Dayton on March 21, and earned the win when the Falcons scored in the bottom half of the frame. In Friday's (Match 23) MAC opener, the senior pitched the final 2.0 innings to earn the save. In Sunday's (March 25) rubber match, the senior was downright dominant. He turned in 3.1 innings of hitless baseball en route to earning his second save on the weekend. Brown struck out three batters in his final appearance on the week.
Female Athlete of the Week
Jovannah East, a sophomore from Zion, Ill., won her first career Mid-American Conference event title last Saturday (March 24) at the 2018 MAC Gymnastics Championships. At McGuirk Arena in Mount Pleasant, Mich., East tied three others on vault with a 9.850. Her co-championship marked the sixth consecutive year in which at least one BGSU gymnast has won a MAC title. She is also the eighth different Falcon to win a MAC title during Kerrie Turner's 11 years as head coach. During the 2018 season, she won on vault 10 times in 13 meets and scored 9.850 or better in 11 of 13. East also finished tied for third in the floor exercise (9.875), tied for second in the all-around (39.300), and tied for ninth on beam (9.875). Her efforts helped BGSU score 195.850 and finish third, just .025 out of second place. It is the fourth time in five years that Bowling Green has earned a top-three finish at the MAC Championships.
