Righter, Walny Named Jet's Athletes Of The Week
April 02, 2018 | Baseball, General, Women's Track and Field
Each week, the Bowling Green State University Athletic Department names the Jet's Pizza Athletes of the Week, as selected by the athletic communications department based on their athletic performances from the previous week. This week's winners are baseball player Randy Righter and track and field distance runner Rachel Walny.
Male Athlete of the Week
Randy Righter, a senior from West Bloomfield, Michigan, had a massive week at the plate, as the Falcons went 2-2 on the week. Righter hit .533 (8-for-15) across the four games, while posting a robust slugging percentage of 1.000. In Bowling Green's weekend series versus Eastern Michigan, the senior recorded multiple hits in all three games. Righter began the series with a 2-for-4 day that also saw him drive in a run. On Saturday, Righter completely took over the game, as he went 3-for-3 with two home runs, one double, three runs scored and two RBI. Righter hit a pair of no-doubt solo shots to left field. On Sunday, the first baseman wrapped up his week with a 3-for-4 day at the dish.
Female Athlete of the Week
Rachel Walny, a redshirt junior from Clinton Township, Mich., ran the 5,000 in 16:27.67 at the Raleigh Relays Friday. Walny's time surpassed the Mid-American Conference automatic qualifying mark by almost 30 seconds and is currently third in the MAC this year. Her time was less than two seconds shy of BGSU's school record, a mark that has stood since 1986.
