Volleyball Celebrates 2017 Season with Banquet and Awards
April 24, 2018 | Volleyball
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Bowling Green volleyball program held its 2017-18 banquet on Sunday evening where it distributed team awards after earning its first MAC regular season title since 1992 with a Mid-American Conference record of 13-3 in the 2017 campaign. Additionally in 2017, the Falcons earned a MAC Player of the Year, MAC Defensive Player of the Year, MAC Coach of the Year, eight Academic All-MAC recipients and four All-MAC honorees. On the night, nine Falcons were awarded the eight team awards for their success and dedication throughout the 2017 season, in addition to two awards being presented to fans and staff for their support.
Many of the awards presented were based on the team's agreed theme of core values for the season, and were presented to athletes who exuded those values to the players and staff. Junior Madeline Brandewie was honored with three awards after being voted to such by her teammates, including the Communication Award, Unity Award and Love Award. This past season, Brandewie appeared in all 29 matches for the Falcons, was named to two All-Tournament Teams, and named to Academic All-MAC honors. A native of Columbus, Ohio, Brandewie totaled 231 kills on the year, in addition to marking double-digit kills on seven occasions.
Named the Excellence Award winner, freshman Taylor Haberland redshirted the 2017 season, but continually had a competitive presence with her teammates in practice. The native of Temperance, Mich., will appear on the court for the Falcons this upcoming fall.
After posting five double-digit kill performances in her 14 matches played, junior Isabel Kovacic was named the Competitiveness Award winner. A native of Littleton, Colo., Kovacic marked a total of 109 kills while hitting .219, and marked a season-high of 16 kills in the 3-1 win at Western Michigan (Oct. 28).
The votes were tied for the Hard Work Award, being presented to both junior Ryann Cox and freshman Kerstie Shaw. Cox, a native of Oregon, Ohio, appeared in seven matches, and earned a total of 42 digs on the season. The junior registered a career-high of 18 digs on two occasions, one of which was in the NIVC First Round at Green Bay (Nov. 30). A native of Brazil, Ind., Shaw competed in 13 matches for the season and earned a total of 18 digs on the year, including a match-high of eight in the 3-2 win at Northern Kentucky (Sept. 9). Shaw also contributed to her team in transferring positions throughout the season to where she was needed.
Named in honor of the first coach in Bowling Green volleyball history, sophomore Victoria Iacobelli was awarded the Pat Peterson Academic Award. Peterson was on hand to present the award to Iacobelli, who holds a 4.0 GPA as a finance major. A native of Novi, Mich., Iacobelli appeared in all 29 matches this season, accruing 271 digs, and was named Academic All-MAC for her efforts both on and off the court. Iacobelli is also one of just five players in the league to complete the season with a perfect 4.0 cumulative GPA, and recorded double-digit digs in 13 matches on the year.
For her contributions throughout the community and volunteerism, redshirt freshman Macie Linne was awarded with the Outstanding Community Service Award, presented by Student-Athlete Services Assistant Coordinator Meghan Horn. On the year, the Fort Collins, Colo. native volunteered more than 77 hours in the Bowling Green community, and appeared in five matches for the Falcons where she earned two kills, four digs, and 2.0 total blocks.
The team also presented Jon and Maureen Stansbery with the Supporters of the Year award for their continuous dedication to the program both home and on the road throughout the 2017-18 campaign. The Stansbery's are members of the Leadership Circle and the President's Club through Falcon Club, and established the Jon and Mo Stansbery Volleyball Scholarship to support a player throughout their collegiate career.
Finally, the Bowling Green volleyball team honored their strength coach in Assistant Director of Strength and Conditioning Emily McClelland with the Appreciation Plaque for her work with the program.
