June 21, 2018 | Ice Hockey
LAS VEGAS, Nev. – Bowling Green hockey alum George McPhee rounded out his highly successful season with the Vegas Golden Knights as he was named 2017-18 General Manager of the Year during Wednesday's NHL Awards show.
The NHL's 31 GMs and a panel of League executives, print and broadcast media voted on the award following the conclusion of the second round of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. McPhee joined the expansion team and created the franchise's first-ever roster before leading the program to the Stanley Cup Final in its inaugural season. Kevin Cheveldayoff of the Winnipeg Jets and Steve Yzerman of the Tampa Bay Lightning were the other finalists this year for GM of the Year.
A forward from 1978-82, McPhee was awarded 1982 First Team All-American honors, in addition to garnering the title of CCHA Player of the Year. With 114 goals and 153 assists, the forward ranks third in program history with 267 total points, and led the Bowling Green squad in points in both the 1978-79 and 1979-80 seasons with 88 and 45, respectively. No. 9 was named Bowling Green's first Hobey Baker Award winner in program history after his four-year career, which ultimately led to a seven-year stint in the National Hockey League where he accrued 49 points in 115 games. One of just three retired numbers in the Bowling Green program, McPhee is a member of the Bowling Green Athletics Hall of Fame after being inducted in his first year of eligibility in 1987.
