Carriaga Honored with Academic All-MAC Selection

BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Senior Michael Carriaga joins 20 other student-athletes as part of the 2008 Swimming and Diving All-Academic Team as released by the Mid-American Conference. The New Mexico native currently sports a 3.35 GPA while majoring in psychology.

In her final year of competition, Carriaga was selected as a team captain and earned second-team All-MAC status for her performance. At the 2008 MAC championships in Buffalo, New York, she earned two MAC medals, placed second in the 100 fly and third in the 200 IM. In addition, she was a member of the BGSU record-breaking 200-medley relay squad which finished fifth at the meet. Carriaga also earned four top three times in competition this season.

Eastern Michigan led the way for the second year in a row with six selections to the squad while MAC champion Ohio followed with four honored athletes . Eight swimmers and divers were repeat honorees from last season's all-academic team.

To be nominated, a student-athlete must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in at least 50 percent of the contests for that particular sport. First year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from the current season only are considered. The number of honorees on the Academic All-MAC Team are the number that is set for the specific sport or 33 percent of the number of nominees, whichever is greater.
