Doug Smith lettered as a second-team center at Bowling Green as a sophomore, after handling long snaps as a freshman. He backed up All-MAC center Steve Studer as a sophomore, while earning his second letter. As a junior, he started at left guard, before seeing some action at center late in the season. Smith served as tri-captain his senior season, earning second-team All-MAC honors.
Smith was signed by the Los Angeles Rams as a free agent, making the Pro Bowl squad in 1984 and 1985.
Doug Smith was inducted to the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1986.
