A native of Van Wert, Ohio, Jim Young first attended Ohio State and played on the Buckeyes' national championship team in 1954. He transferred to BGSU a year later, and lettered as a fullback on Doyt Perry's first MAC Championship team in 1956. A 1957 graduate with a physical education degree, Young served as a graduate assistant coach and freshman coach, while earning his master's degree in education. He even coached BGSU's 1959-60 wrestling team to the MAC Championship.
Jim Young was inducted to the BGSU Athletic Hall of Fame in 1988.
