BGSU Cheerleading Wins National Championship!
January 19, 2014 | General
Orlando, Fla. – The Bowling Green State University cheerleading team dethroned eight-time defending national champion Hofstra to win the Small Co-ed National Championship Saturday at the College Cheer and Dance National championships at ESPN Wide World of Sports.
The Falcons climbed from third place after the semifinals among 21 cheer programs from around the country including Hofstra, Purdue, San Diego State, Rutgers, Colorado State, George Mason and Syracuse.
"We were motivated to win this year after finishing just .7 points behind Hofstra last season," BGSU Cheer Coach Anne Marie King said. "We have worked hard over the past five years to consistently be a top five cheer program."
BGSU returned 11-of-12 female student-athletes from a year ago but had to replace four graduated male cheerleaders.
"I saw the determination and passion from the start of the season," King said. "I knew this team was willing to work hard and accomplish our goal. We strive to improve each year as a program and winning the national championship was the next step to our programs' success."
Along with the co-ed national championship, BGSU's all-girl cheer and dance team were national finalists and the all-girl team, competing at nationals for the first time, placed ninth out of 16 in the semifinals of the All-Girl D1A Division, missing the finals by less than a point. The dance team competed in Jazz D1A Division and placed in the top 20 in the nation.
"We are so proud of our cheerleading squad," BGSU Director of Athletics Chris Kingston said. "We are very fortunate to have such talented student-athletes supporting BGSU Athletics. They have achieved this National Championship for Bowling Green through their relentless hard work and determination."
