February 14, 2019 | Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country
NEW ORLEANS, La. - The U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) announced the NCAA D-I Cross Country Team and Individual All-Academic Awards from the 2018 cross country season Thursday (Feb. 14) afternoon. Among those named were Bowling Green State University's men and women's teams, as well as Rachel Walny. This year, 195 men's teams were selected, 230 women's teams and 155 women individually.
Bowling Green's men's team tied for 10th nationally, finishing the semester with an average 3.55 team grade point average. Within the Mid-American Conference, this ranks second behind only Eastern Michigan.
The Falcons' women's team tied for 19th nationally of the 230 recognized, closing out the semester with a team grade point average of 3.66. In the MAC, only Kent State recorded a higher team average. This is the second consecutive year that the women's team has ranked second in the conference.
In eight season under Coach Lou Snelling, both teams have exhibited extraordinary effort both on and off the course. Since 2011, the men's team has ranked first in the MAC for GPA five times, while finishing second in the other three years. As for the women's team, they have finished in the top five in the MAC each of the last five years. Â
For Rachel Walny, she has been recognized individually by the USTFCCA for All-Academic. This will be the latest addition to her list of accomplishments during her collegiate career. Among the list is two school records, three first place finishes, four All-Region honors and many more accolades.
BGSU had thirteen Falcons named to the cross country Academic All-MAC teams this year. Seven members of the men's team were named, while six were announced from the women's team. In addition, the cross country programs had three athletes named as Fall Distinguished Scholar-Athletes by the Mid-American Conference.
