Senior trio to guide two-time defending MAC champions
A trio of seniors – Nikki Cox, Nikhita Jacob and Rachel Muller – have been named captains of the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team for the 2020-21 season.
"All three of these captains provide a different personality that helps provide a great balance to our team," said head coach Jimmy Walker, who is in his first season at the helm of the Falcons.
Cox, a native of Granville, Ohio (Granville H.S.), finished second on the Falcons in both goals and points in 2019, earning All-MAC and All-Ohio First-Team honors. She started all 23 matches in 2019, and had a total of 23 points on nine goals and five assists. Cox scored a team-high three game-winning goals, including the winner in back-to-back games late in the season. Her GWG against Toledo enabled BG to clinch the MAC regular-season crown outright, and her winner against Central Michigan three days later helped the Falcons to victory in the MAC Tournament's quarterfinal round. Cox, after just two years with the Falcons, is ranked 11th in school history in goals. She has 42 points in 45 games as a Falcon, including 17 goals and eight assists. In addition to her aforementioned accolades, Cox was named to the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Second Team.
"Nikki brings a ton of energy and passion to our program both on and off the field," said Walker. "She provides a spark to our attacking unit and is a fierce competitor."
Jacob, who hails from Ann Arbor, Mich. (Pioneer H.S.), has been in the Falcons' starting XI since her arrival on campus. She has played in 65 matches, starting 62, in her first three seasons at BGSU. Jacob enters the 2020-21 campaign with a career total of 13 points, including seven last season. She had two goals and three assists in 2019, as the Falcons won the MAC's regular-season and tournament titles for the second consecutive year. Her two goals on the season included the game-winner at Kent State. Jacob, however, also found the back of the net during the penalty-kick phase of the MAC Tournament's championship match. She converted the clinching PK in the fifth round, giving the Falcons the 2019 tourney title. Jacob, who was named to the MAC's All-Tournament Team for the second consecutive year, was the MAC Tournament MVP in '19. A two-time Academic All-MAC Team selection, she was named BGSU's Player's Player of the Year last season.
"Nikhita is a very calm and composed young lady that leads by example both on and off the field," said Walker. "She brings experience to our midfield and adds a focused mindset to our team."
Muller, a native of Castle Rock, Colo. (Douglas County H.S.), is in her fifth year at BGSU. She played in 18 matches during her freshman season of 2016, and scored the game-winning goal vs. Northern Illinois in late October of the year. But, Muller has seen action in just nine matches since that time, due to injury. After missing the 2017 campaign, she saw action in eight contests during the 2018 season, scoring a goal in a September win at Cochrane Stadium. Last fall, Muller came off the bench to play in the season opener at Kentucky, but was injured several minutes later, and missed the remainder of the season. Muller has played in a total of 27 contests, making 12 starts, as a Falcon. She has four career points on a pair of goals.
"Rachel is a fantastic young lady that leads by example on and off the field," said Walker. "A fifth-year senior, she brings a ton of experience to our team, and to our defensive unit in particular."

BGSU, as mentioned, has won both the MAC regular-season and tournament titles in each of the last two seasons. The 2019 Falcons went 14-6-3 overall, tying the school record for wins for the second-straight season. The Falcons scored a school-record 46 goals in 2019, en route to the third league regular-season title and the fourth MAC Tournament crown in program history.
