Four Falcons Named to USC All-Region Team
May 12, 2021 | Women's Soccer
BGSU has two first-team selections for the first time in program history
After winning yet another Mid-American Conference championship, the Bowling Green State University women's soccer team continues to earn honors. The Falcons have landed four players on the United Soccer Coaches All-Midwest Region Team.
Nikki Cox and Madi Wolfbauer were named to the first team, becoming the third and fourth all-region first-team selections in program history, while Lili Berg and Kennedy White were named to the all-region second team.
Cox is just the third two-time all-region selection in BGSU history, joining her former teammates Maureen Kennedy and Chelsee Washington.
The 2020-21 academic year marks the first time in program history that the Falcons have had two all-region first-team selections.
"I am really pleased for the four women that have been selected to the all-region team," said BGSU head coach Jimmy Walker. "They have all done really well during a difficult year and they are deserving of this recognition. It speaks a lot about the success of the team when players receive postseason awards. It's a first for the program to have two players placed on the first team in the same season, which is awesome for our program!"
BGSU's total of four all-region honorees is the second-highest in program history. The Falcons had never had more than two all-region selections (in 2005) prior to landing a school-record five players in 2018, and BG had three more players named to the team in 2019. The 2005, '18 and '19 teams all saw the Falcons win both the Mid-American Conference regular-season and tournament titles.
Â
BGSU has had 13 all-region selections in the last four seasons, after having a total of three in the first 20 years of the program.
BG tied Buffalo for the most first-team representatives of any MAC school on the 2020-21 All-Midwest Region Team, and the Falcons tied Ball State for the most overall players among league institutions. Among MAC schools, BGSU and BSU each had four players selected to the all-region team, while UB and Western Michigan had three each and Eastern Michigan two.
Among all schools in the region, Texas Christian (TCU) led the way with five players named to the team, while BGSU, BSU and Loyola University Chicago each had four honorees.
Â
Cox, a native of Granville, Ohio, finished fourth on the team in scoring, with four points. An All-MAC First-Team selection, she led the Falcons in total shot attempts (34) and finished second in shots on goal (14). Cox scored a goal and added an assist in BGSU's 5-0 win over Kent State at Cochrane Stadium, and also had an assist in a 3-0 road victory vs. Akron in the season opener. She has averaged nearly a point per game in her stellar Falcon career, with 46 points in 52 contests, and leads all active Falcons in goals (18), assists (10) and points.
"It is great to see Nikki Cox selected as first team," said Walker. "She is a competitor with an unbelievable work ethic. Nikki has a really good future ahead of her and we are excited to have her back next season for her last year!"
Wolfbauer, a native of Canton, Mich., led BGSU in scoring this spring. Wolfbauer, like Cox an All-MAC First-Team honoree, she had five goals and 10 points in eight matches this season, her first on the pitch with the Falcons. All five goals came in a three-match span, and she became the first BGSU player with back-to-back multiple-goal games in over a decade. Wolfbauer sat out the 2019 season due to injury after transferring from the University of Illinois
"Madi has had a fantastic season coming back from a bad injury the previous year," said Walker. "Madi has worked tirelessly this season to get to where she is and it is pleasing to see her rewarded for all her hard work. Madi is extremely talented, and we are excited to see her back again this fall!"
Berg, who hails from New Berlin, Wis., had a miniscule 0.38 goals-against average, having allowed only three goals in nearly 744 minutes of action this season. In eight starts, the first-year Falcon kept four clean sheets and played over 70 minutes in two other shutout wins, exiting those contests with BGSU ahead by at least three goals in each case. Berg, an All-MAC Second-Team selection, is in her first season with the Falcons after transferring to BGSU from Ohio State.
"Lili has been an awesome addition to our program after coming in from Ohio State," said Walker. "Her growth over this season has been amazing to see. We are excited to see her continue to progress into the fall season."
White, a native of Canton, Mich., was second on the team in goals and points. She had nine points on four goals and an assist, and two of those four goals were game winners. She found the back of the net in wins over Akron on the road and Miami at home, and she scored a 'Golden Goal' in BGSU's 1-0 overtime victory vs. Ohio at Cochrane Stadium. White also scored the opening goal of the Falcons' 2-1 win over Ball State in the MAC Championship. She is just the fourth player in BGSU history with more than one career 'Golden Goal,' and she has averaged a point per match, with 31 points (including 14 goals) in 31 career contests as a Falcon.
"Kenna has stepped up in big moments and is continuing to progress and improve all the time," said Walker. "She has performed at a very high level as an underclassmen and we are very excited to see her progression over the next couple of years."
BGSU went 6-1-1 overall and 5-1-0 in MAC play, and the Falcons had six shutouts in eight matches. BG outscored opponents, 17-3, this spring.
The Falcons are now 47-19-8 overall, 31-7-1 in MAC regular-season matches and 38-8-3 in all games vs. conference foes since the start of the 2017 season.
Since the beginning of the 2018 campaign, the Falcons are 34-12-7Â overall, 25-3-0 in MAC regular-season action and 30-3-2 in all games vs. league opposition.
