Fleming Named to Becky Hammon Award Preseason Watch List
October 19, 2022 | Women's Basketball
HOPEWELL, N.J. — Bowling Green State University women's basketball standout Lexi Fleming has been named to the preseason watch list for the 2023 Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award presented by Her Hoop Stats. The 25-member watch list was unveiled on Wednesday morning (Oct. 19).
"This is a wonderful recognition for Lexi," said BGSU head coach Robyn Fralick. "She has worked incredibly hard to return for this season. She makes such an impact in our program with her leadership and competitiveness."
Fleming, who enters her third season with the BGSU program, is certainly no stranger to the Becky Hammon Award watch lists. Two years ago, she was one of 15 players – but the only freshman – to be named to the Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Midseason Watch List. That announcement came in January of 2021.
Then, last season, Fleming was named to the Becky Hammon Award's preseason list, before suffering an injury and missing the 2021-22 campaign.
Fleming, a native of Cincinnati, Ohio (Mercy McAuley), has been named a BGSU team captain in 2022-23, earning that honor for the second consecutive season.
In the '20-21 campaign, Fleming was named the Mid-American Conference Freshman of the Year, and also was named to the All-MAC Second Team.
Fleming played in 27 of BGSU's 29 games in 2020-21, starting all 27, and led the team in scoring with 15.9 points per game. She also paced the Falcons in minutes played (33.1 mpg), free throws made (89) and attempted (111), FT percentage (.802), steals (67) and steals per game (2.48) in her initial season in Northwest Ohio.
She made 57 three-point field goals to rank second on the Falcons, and also was fourth on the Falcons in assists (2.52). Her total of 67 steals was the highest by a freshman in BGSU history.
ABOUT THE FALCONS
A total of 10 student-athletes, including four starters, return from the 2021-22 team. They are joined by five newcomers, including a pair of transfers.
The 2021-22 Falcons, despite losing nearly 75 player-games to injury, won 17 games and advanced to national postseason play for the second-straight season. BGSU went 17-16 overall and 10-10 in Mid-American Conference play, and the Falcons were selected to participate in the Women's Basketball Invitational (WBI). BG went 2-1 in that tourney, finishing the '21-22 season with a victory.

THE BECKY HAMMON AWARD
The Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year Award was first given out in 2020, with South Dakota's Ciara Duffy being named the inaugural winner. FGCU's Kierstan Bell won the award in 2021 and 2022. This year's preseason watch list includes representatives from 25 schools and 13 conferences. The Mid-American Conference is one of two leagues with four players on the list.
AWARD ELIGIBILITY AND SCHEDULE
To be eligible for this award, players must compete in one of the 26 conferences deemed to be "mid-major." The following conferences are considered high-major for the purposes of this award, and thus ineligible: ACC, Big 12, Big East, Big Ten, Pac-12, and SEC.
In January, 15 players will be named to the midseason watch list. The 10 semifinalists will be announced in February, with five finalists being announced in early March. The winner will be announced in late March. The list is fluid and players may play their way on or off the list over the course of the season.
ABOUT BECKY HAMMON
Hammon was a three-time All-American during her career at Colorado State and led the Rams to the Sweet 16 in 1999, the program's only appearance to date. She was signed by the New York Liberty in 1999 and traded to the San Antonio Stars in 2007, where she played the rest of her career. Hammon retired in 2014 as a six-time All-Star and a two-time All-WNBA First Team honoree. In 2016 she was named one of the top 20 players in WNBA history and was recently named to the W25.
Hammon became the second female coach in NBA history when she began coaching for the San Antonio Spurs in 2014. Additionally, Hammon is the only woman to be a head coach in the NBA Summer League as well as the only woman to be a member of an NBA All-Star coaching staff. Currently, Hammon is the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces and won the 2022 WNBA Championship in her first season.
