BGSU Athletic Department Holds Scholar-Athlete Banquet

Bowling Green, Ohio - Seniors Burke Badenhop (baseball) and Erin Dilkes (swimming), along with juniors Emily Manser (volleyball) and Jonathan Culp (football), took home top honors at the 2005 BGSU Scholar-Athlete Banquet Sunday evening.

Badenhop, a native of Perrysburg, Ohio, was named the 2004-05 Male Senior Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He holds a 3.94 cumulative grade-point average as an economics major. He leads BGSU with six victories, 50.0 innings pitched, and nine starts. He also has a 3.60 ERA with 42 strikeouts and 14 walks. Badenhop was named MAC Scholar-Athlete of the Week and MAC West Pitcher of the Week on April 14 after pitching his first-ever complete game shutout in a 1-0 victory vs. Buffalo. Last season he was named BGSU's Junior Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the All-MAC Academic Team in 2004.

Dilkes, a native of Kitchener, Ontario, was named the 2004-05 Female Senior Scholar Athlete of the Year. She holds a 3.86 cumulative GPA in biology. The senior helped BGSU to a fifth-place finish at the 2005 MAC Championships. Dilkes was the top qualifier in the 100 breaststroke during preliminaries and came up with a third place finish in the finals in a time of 1:05.06. Dilkes was one of five women's swimming and diving team members to be announced to the 2005 Academic All-MAC team.
Both Badenhop and Dilkes were honored with the Meserve Scholarship, which is named for longtime BGSU professor and BGSU Faculty Representative for Athletics Dr. Lee Meserve and his wife, Marge.

Culp, a native of Mason, Ohio, was named the 2004-05 Falcon Club Male Junior Student-Athlete of the Year. He maintains a 3.71 cumulative GPA in broadcast journalism. Culp played in all 12 games last season, helping the Falcons to a GMAC Bowl victory over Memphis. He also helped the Falcons rank nationally and lead the MAC in scoring offense (43.6), pass offense (335.6), total offense (501.6), turnover margin (1.36) and sacks against (1.00) per game. He also helped the team to a 4.7 yards per rush, which ranked second in the MAC.

Manser, a native of Westerville, Ohio, was named 2004-05 Falcon Club Female Junior Student-Athlete of the Year. She maintains a perfect 4.00 GPA, while majoring in communication disorders. This past fall the left-side hitter became only the fourth Falcon in school history to be named to the First-Team All-District Academic Team. She was also named MAC Player of the Week on Sept. 27 after leading the Falcons to a pair of conference wins over Toledo (12 kills and 17 digs) and Northern Illinois (15 kills and 16 digs). Manser recorded 12 double-doubles on the season including a 14-kill and 10-dig performance versus Akron in the opening round of the MAC Tournament.
Four Falcon teams also were lauded for their academic achievements. The women's gymnastics team received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or more participants. The Falcons of head coach Dan Connelly have a team GPA of 3.27 through the 2004 Fall semester, up from 3.14 GPA last year. Five gymnasts have a 4.0 GPA and over half of the team has a 3.5 GPA or better.
The men's basketball team received the award for Most Improved GPA for teams with 20 or fewer participants. Head coach Dan Dakich's team currently has an aggregate GPA of 2.79, up from 2.56.
The women's swimming and diving team earned the award for the Highest GPA for large teams (teams with over 20 participants). Head coach Keri Buff's team has a cumulative GPA of 3.48. Eighty-percent of the team had a 3.0 GPA or higher while three had a 4.0 GPA and nearly half the team had a 3.5 or higher.
The Falcon volleyball team was recognized for having the highest GPA of teams with less than 20 members. Denise Van De Walle's team had a GPA of 3.76, with every member registering a GPA of 3.0 or better.
Former Falcon swimming All-American, Valerie Newell, was named a Distinguished Alumna. Newell was a three-year co-captain and earned All-America status her junior and senior years. As a junior, she had the highest cumulative GPA in the School of Business and was named the BGSU Outstanding Senior Woman graduate in 1975. She recently served as chair of the BGSU Board of Trustees. Dr. Chris Dalton, Vice-President for Finance & Administration, also earned special recognition.
A total of 94 BGSU student-athletes and four student athletic trainers were honored for achieving a cumulative GPA of 3.50 or better, with 25 of those student-athletes earning a perfect 4.0. Thirty-three more have a cumulative GPA ranging from 3.75 to 3.99.
