BOWLING GREEN, Ohio - Junior Kate Achter was perfect from the field, and Achter and her Bowling Green State University women's basketball teammates shot over 60 percent from the field for the second consecutive game. It all added up to an 86-67 win over Temple University Friday night (Nov. 24) in non-conference action at Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 4-1 on the season, while the Owls drop to 2-1.
Achter was a perfect 8-of-8 from the field en route to a 23-point night, while senior Ali Mann also scored 23 points on 8-of-10 shooting.
For the Owls, Fatima Maddox had a game-high 24 points, while Toledo native Kamesha Hairston had 22 points and a game-best seven rebounds. Hairston also scored her 1,000th career point in the game.
Seniors Amber Flynn and Carin Horne scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Brown and Orange.
The game's first 10 minutes featured four lead changes, as neither team led by more than three points. Mann opened the scoring with a jumper one minute into the game, but Hairston answered with a three-point field goal. Horne and Achter scored to give the Falcons a 6-3 lead at the first media timeout of the night.
Achter's hoop was aided by senior Liz Honegger, who set a monster pick at the top of the key. That pick opened the lane, and Achter drove uncontested for a layup.
The Brown and Orange looked to be in some trouble when both Horne and Honegger picked up two fouls by the 13:37 mark of the first half. TU's Lady Comfort hit a pair of free throws after Honegger's second foul to give the visitors an 11-8 lead.
The Falcons battled back, however, as Achter hit a pair of long two-pointers, sandwiched around a left-side three-pointer from Flynn, just the second triple of her career. Achter's second hoop in that stretch narrowed Temple's lead to 19-18 with 11:18 left in the first half.
A basket by Mann at the 9:53 mark gave the Brown and Orange the lead for good. Sophomore Jasmine McCall followed with a jumper for a three-point lead.
After Maddox converted a layup, Flynn took a pass from Mann and drained a right-elbow trey, her second of the night, at the 7:39 mark. A minute later, sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry -- in the game for Horne -- ripped a rebound out of the hands of TU's Jasmine Stone and fired a long outlet pass to junior Whitney Taylor for a fast-break layup and a 26-22 lead.
Goldsberry would score the next hoop herself, using a nice shot fake from the arc to get her defender in the air, then taking one dribble and draining a left-side jumper for a 28-22 advantage. Goldsberry proceeded to get a steal on the ensuing possession, and Mann's nifty drive resulted in a twisting layup between two defenders, a foul and a free throw for a nine-point lead with just under five minutes left before the break.
Goldsberry was at it again on the next TU possession, tying up Comfort for a jump ball with the possession arrow pointing BGSU's way. After a BG miss, Goldsberry grabbed an offensive rebound to give the Falcons a second chance, which resulted in an Achter layup and a double-digit margin, 33-22.
Achter capped an 11-0 run with a layup at the 3:17 mark, and after Maddox answered with a jumper at the other end, Achter converted again to give BGSU a 37-24 lead.
Flynn asserted herself at the defensive end, taking a charge by Temple's Ashley Morris that resulted in Morris's third foul of the game with 95 seconds left in the half.
Senior Megan Thorburn hit a three-pointer off an Achter pass to give the Falcons an 18-point lead with 29 seconds left in the opening half, before Nicole Pittman's layup cut BG's advantage to 42-26 at the intermission.
In that first half, the Falcons shot 64.3% from the floor, going 18-for-28 from the field. BGSU was 3-of-7 from three-point range in the opening 20 minutes, with Flynn responsible for two of the three successful treys.
Achter and Mann combined for 25 of the 42 points in the opening half, while Goldsberry did a little bit of everything during the 11-0 run (more on that in the 'notes' section of this story).
The Owls looked to get back into the game in the second half, but never could cut BG's lead below 13 points.
The Falcons got several chances on the team's opening possession of the half. After an Owl turnover, Honegger and Horne each got offensive rebounds, resulting in three 'third-chance' points from Mann. The senior tri-captain took Horne's kick-out pass and drained a triple from the right elbow.
Thirty seconds later, after a Mann defensive rebound, Achter spotted Horne running ahead of the pack for a layup and a 21-point lead, 47-26.
The Owls looked to make a run, scoring nine of the game's next 12 points to cut the lead to 50-35. But, Honegger took a pass from Goldsberry and hit a straightaway 3 to give the Falcons an 18-point lead at the initial media timeout of the half.
Immediately out of that timeout, Mann got a steal, poking the inbounds pass away from an opposing player. Then, McCall saw Mann sliding past her defender, and the sophomore's entry pass found the senior for a layup.
Hairston scored six of Temple's next seven points, and the senior's turnaround jumper with 12:17 left in the game provided a milestone, moving her past 1,000 career points.
Midway through the half, however, Goldsberry took a pass from Mann and hit a three-ball with the shot clock at three, and BG's lead was 66-46. The Owls scored the next five points to get within 15, and the Falcons' advantage was cut to 13 on a Maddox layup with 5:35 left. But, Thorburn's pass found Honegger for a three-pointer that put the Brown and Orange up by a 73-57 count.
A driving layup by Achter with just under four minutes left gave the Falcons a 77-61 lead, and nearly all of the game's remaining points came from the foul line.
The crowd of over 1,000 had the opportunity for free fries after McCall's pass to Flynn resulted in a layup with 18 seconds left, putting the Falcons over the 85-point mark.
For the game, BGSU shot 61.2% from the floor, and the Falcons made 9-of-18 three-point tries (50.0%). Temple shot 49.0% from the field and went 5-of-14 from beyond the arc (35.7%).
BGSU had a 26-23 rebounding advantage, with Flynn and Horne each grabbing four. Goldsberry's balanced stat line also included four boards, as well as a three-pointer, three assists and three steals.
Achter had four assists in addition to her 23 points, and Mann had two assists and three boards while playing all 40 minutes.
The Falcons forced 11 first-half turnovers by the Owls, and BGSU had a 13-0 advantage in points off turnovers in the opening 20 minutes. For the game, BG's edge in that category was 18-7, as the Falcons made 11 turnovers to the Owls' 14.
Flynn had 12 points off the bench for the third-straight game, as BG's bench outscored their TU counterparts, 21-8. Goldsberry had five points on the night.
Honegger, despite playing only 16 minutes due to her early foul trouble in each half, hit a pair of key three-pointers for six points.
The Falcons continue a three-game homestand with a Wednesday (Nov. 29) game vs. Oakland University. Tipoff for that game is 7:00 p.m. at 'The House That Roars.'
NOTES
* The Falcons are now 23-10 all-time in home openers (locations of BGSU's 1973-74 games are unknown), which includes a 4-2 mark since Curt Miller assumed the helm ... the Falcons have won four-straight home openers, and 16 of the last 19.
* Overall, BGSU has won 19 consecutive home games, the third-longest streak in the nation.
* Prior to the game, the Falcons took part in a ring ceremony and banner unveiling ... last year's seniors, Jill Lause and Casey McDowell, were on hand at the game ... the members of the 2005-06 MAC championship team were presented their championship rings by BGSU Director of Athletics Greg Christopher, and Lause and McDowell then helped Miller unveil the newest banner high atop the north end of Anderson Arena.
* The Falcons' total of 86 points is the most allowed by a Temple team in nearly four years, since the Owls fell, 89-80 in overtime, to Massachusetts on Jan. 16, 2003.
* Senior Amber Flynn, as mentioned, has scored 12 points off the bench in each of the last three games ... Flynn, who entered Friday's game with a career total of one three-point field goal made, hit a pair of treys in the win over the Owls.
* Temple's Kamesha Hairston, a Toledo native, became the 15th player in school history to score 1,000 points in her career ... Hairston is a Bowsher H.S. grad.
Junior Kate Achter was a perfect 8-for-8 from the field, matching her career best ... Achter also had an 8-for-8 night against Youngstown State, in just her fourth game as a Falcon ... that game, on Nov. 30, 2004, was her first-ever home game for the Brown and Orange, and she scored 23 points in that contest as well.
* Achter recorded her 300th career assist on Friday night, becoming just the eighth player in school history to do so.
* The Falcons shot over 60.0 percent from the field for the second consecutive game ... BGSU has shot a combined 69.6% in the opening half of the last two contests, with an 18-for-28 (64.3%) effort in the first half against the Owls ... the Falcons shot 21-for-28 (75.0%) before halftime against Fairleigh Dickinson in the championship game of the UCF Tournament last weekend.
* Senior Carin Horne, despite some early foul trouble, had 10 points vs. Temple ... Horne now has 979 career points, and is in line to become the 21st player in school history to reach the 1,000-point mark.
* Achter, just a junior, now has a career total of 738 points ... she has moved into 33rd place on the BGSU career list.
* Sophomore Lindsey Goldsberry tied her career best with three steals ... her previous mark had been set last weekend, as she also had three steals in the win over Albany.
* Goldsberry had a well-rounded stats line on Friday night ... during the Falcons' 11-0 run late in the first half, she displayed her versatility with a defensive rebound, an assist, a jumper from the left baseline, steals on back-to-back Temple possessions, an offensive rebound and yet another steal ... that came in a span of less than three minutes.
* That 11-0 BGSU run means that the Falcons have had at least one run of 10 points or more in each of this season's first five games ... BGSU reeled off 16-straight points at Detroit, a run that was larger than any the Falcons had during all of the 2005-06 season ... and, BG had first-half runs of 10-0 and 11-0 at Notre Dame ... the Brown and Orange also had 10-0 first-half runs vs. both Albany and FDU.
* The Temple game, of course, opened the home portion of the schedule for BGSU ... all five of the Falcons' home non-conference games are against teams that won 20 games last year and/or went to a national tournament ... BG's next opponent, Oakland, qualified for the 2006 NCAA Championships and played a first-round game in West Lafayette, Ind., just like the Falcons.
* Friday's game was the first women's basketball contest under a scheduling partnership between the MAC and Temple ... in May of 2005, the MAC added the Owls as a football-only member (effective in the fall of 2007) with a plan that includes a men's and women's basketball scheduling partnership with the Philadelphia-based institution.
