BOWLING GREEN, Ohio (BGSUFalcons.com) - Seniors Liz Honegger and Carin Horne scored 17 points apiece as the Bowling Green State University women's basketball team posted a 74-52 win over Kent State University Wednesday night (Jan. 10). The Mid-American Conference game was held at BGSU's Anderson Arena.
With the win, the Falcons improve to 13-2 overall and a perfect 3-0 in MAC action. Wednesday's victory was BGSU's 28th-straight win over MAC opposition, setting a new league record. The Golden Flashes drop to 6-8 and 2-1, respectively.
Senior Ali Mann had 13 points for the Falcons, who won for the 25th consecutive outing at home. La'kia Stewart led the visitors with 11 points, while Kristin Peoples had 10.
Stewart had a game-high 12 rebounds for a double-double, while Honegger also had a double-double, leading BG with 10 boards. The Falcons held a 36-32 rebounding advantage over KSU, which entered the game second in the league in rebounding margin.
The game was scoreless for the first 1:16, before Honegger drew a foul and got to the line for a pair of free throws. KSU's Samantha Scull responded with a short jumper at the other end, but Mann knocked down a shot at the 17:55 mark, and the Falcons would never trail again.
Junior Kate Achter hit a running layup to give the Falcons a 6-2 lead, and a quick steal by Horne off the inbounds pass gave BG the ball right back. That possession culminated with a Honegger three-point field goal at the 16:52 mark, and BG held a 9-2 lead.
Achter, who had that assist, spotted Honegger again, this time for a layup and an 11-5 lead less than a minute later. BGSU also drew Peoples' second foul of the game at the 15:51 mark.
The Flashes responded, as Jamilah Humes scored the game's next five points, and Sarah Burgess followed with a rebound of her own miss and a layup. Suddenly, BG's lead was 13-12. But, Achter's entry pass found senior Amber Flynn inside for an easy layup, and a Flynn steal led to sophomore Jasmine McCall's pass to Mann for a fast-break three-pointer and an 18-12 advantage.
That lead grew to double digits after a Flynn layup and a Honegger trey, and the Golden Flashes took a timeout. BG kept building the lead, however, as another Achter pass led to Honegger's layup on the break, and a 27-14 margin.
Mallorie Griffith scored for the visitors, but Horne took soph Lindsey Goldsberry's pass and drained a three-ball. On the next possession, Horne stole the ball and raced downcourt with Goldsberry on a two-on-one break. Horne passed the ball to Goldsberry, then received it right back on the soph's touch pass. The give-and-go play led to an easy layup by Horne, a 32-16 advantage, and another timeout by the visitors at the 7:14 mark.
Hoops by Horne and Mann, followed by Mann's free throw, gave BG a 7-0 run and a 37-16 lead, and the Falcons' lead was 20 points -- 44-24 -- at the half.
Honegger scored 17 points in that first half as the Falcons shot 53.1 percent from the field. Mann had 10 points and four assists before intermission, while Achter dished out five helpers.
KSU, a perennial MAC power, would not go away quietly. The Flashes started the second half on an 8-2 run, capped by a Peoples steal and breakaway layup, and the visitors were within 46-32 as Falcon head coach Curt Miller used a timeout.
Out of that break, however, Horne spotted a cutting Megan Thorburn for a layup, and Mann stole the ball on the ensuing KSU possession. After that steal, McCall's pass led to Horne's left-side triple try, and the shot found nothing but net for a 51-32 Falcon lead with 17:17 on the clock.
Both teams then battled through over four minutes of scoreless basketball before McCall split a pair of charity tosses. Horne hit another trey for a 55-34 BG margin at the 11:46 mark, the the Flashes would get no closer than 19 points the rest of the evening.
Exactly halfway through the second period, Achter passed the ball inside to Honegger. The senior drew several defenders and kicked the ball out to Goldsberry for a long three-ball which gave the Brown and Orange a 60-38 lead.
Several minutes later, Horne used the glass to convert a sweet pull-up jumper, and Achter threw a pass inside to Flynn for an easy layup. A Goldsberry steal led to two free throws by Flynn, and Thorburn hit two tosses of her own for a 27-point lead, the biggest of the night to that point, at 69-42.
That advantage grew to 29 points when Thorburn drained a three-popinter at the 4:50 mark, and the Falcons held a 72-46 lead when Miller removed his remaining three starters from the game. KSU outscored the Falcons by a 6-2 count over the final three minutes to provide the final 22-point margin.
For the Falcons, Flynn joined her three classmates in double digits with 10 points off the bench, and Thorburn added seven. Achter had four points and a game-high six assists, while McCall ended the night with five assists and just one turnover.
BGSU shot 47.2% from the field to KSU's 37.7%, and the Falcons made 9-of-20 three-point tries. BG forced Kent State into 20 turnovers, and the home team held a 23-10 edge in points off turnovers.
The Falcons now hit the road for the next two games, beginning with a Saturday (Jan. 13) contest at Ohio University. Tipoff for that game is 4:00 p.m.
NOTES
* The Falcons increased several impressive streaks in Wednesday's win ... BG has now won 28 consecutive games (regular-season and tournament) against MAC foes, a new league record ... the Falcons have not lost to a conference opponent since a 57-52 road setback vs. Eastern Michigan nearly two years ago (Feb. 19, 2005).
* BGSU topped the old mark of 27-straight wins over league foes ... that mark was set by Fran Voll-coached Falcon teams, from Feb. 13, 1988 to Jan. 3, 1990 ... Voll was in attendance Wednesday night, performing his usual job as color analyst for the BCSN telecast of the game.
* BGSU's win was the Falcons' 25th in a row at home, the second-longest active home winning steak in the country ... LSU holds the longest current streak with 39-straight home wins.
